Questions about getting new puppy, advice please!

Hi everyone! My husband and I want to get a second sheltie, preferably a little sister for Sandstorm! He is 9 years old now, and very easy to manage, a joy! I have researched breeders in the New England area, obtained through the tri-state and Granite state Shetland sheepdog clubs. I definitely know what we want; a pet quality puppy with great health lines and temperament is most important to me, one that will go with Sandstorms. We are thinking ahead and would like to get the pup in very late spring or early summer, due to work schedules. Is it too early to get on breeders waiting lists and/or ask about breeder hopefuls? Thanks for any suggestions!!
 
I'd say it's definitely never too early to get to know the breeders and their dogs. Most breeders have some idea of which females they're going to breed and the possible sires. There's nothing wrong with talking to several breeders just let them know that your going to check out other breeders as well.
Also, if you do get your name on a waiting list and decide to go with another breeder make sure you remove your name from the other list. Congratulations on deciding on another puppy...exciting times ahead for your family!
 
Yes, I agree. Get on waiting lists now would give you the best chance of finding your new pup. Having a new pup is so much fun but quite a bit of work too!

With Sandstorm being 8 it can be an adjustment for him. Shelties are so sweet and love to welcome a new family member and the new pup can keep him young by running around!

Just a word of caution... I wanted a pup and put a down payment of $250 and it was non refundable. You might want to ask upfront if this is the case for the breeders you are researching. Good luck!
 
Breeders are planning now for winter litters and spring puppies so it's a good time to contact those you'd like to consider. Remember that a puppy born in March, for instance, won't go home until May! I'm a member of Tri State and know the Granite State folks too...there are lots of really good breeders in those groups. You can't go wrong. Good luck and happy hunting!
