BarbV: We discovered the lesion when I was brushing his teeth. He had his mouth open wide and actually my mother saw the lesion. My vet asked the same question: How on earth did you see this? I am still kicking myself because we didn't see it sooner. You see, I look in every crack and crevice on his body every week at our major grooming time. I don' t know if I was opening his mouth and putting my fingers on it, don't know how I missed it. The crack & crevice examinations began after my late sheltie Cooper was diagnosed with a Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) on his third eyelid. I just happen to see it one evening. Coop lived about 10 weeks after I found the tumor. His tumor was actually a spread from a HSA on his liver. The liver tumor ruptured and he died within three hours. After that nightmare I swore I would check every part of their bodies that I could get to.
yes, you would be well advised to check your dog's mouth every week. Pull up the gums, look at them. Raise up the tongue, look under it, Pull the tongue forward and look all around it. Check the anal area every week. Check the ears. I check, check, check and still miss things.
Thanks for your concern.
