Reaction to K9 Advantix

I'm not sure if this is the same thing or not.

A while back I tried that Nature's Guardian all natural spot. Sadie HATED the smell of it. At first her reaction wasn't that bad, but after multiple applications it was evident she was getting worse instead of tolerating it better.

She'd rub her body against anything she could find, couldn't settle, paced around, acted agitated, stopped playing with her sibblings and became very clingy. She started waking us up at night crawling all over us, trying to escape from it. I had to wash as much of it off as I could but the damage was done.

I never used it again but she never forgot her experience. I went back to our usual spot on which didn't have a strong smell but she reacted badly to that as well. It stressed her out so much I stopped using spot ons with her.

I started using Trifexis last summer and had great results.

I've been using Pet Armor

I've been using Pet Armor Who's primary ingredient is Fipronil on Lumiere. Lately he's been extremely sensitive to touch / petting around his shoulders. He seems fine otherwise. I've tried to see if he has any sores or rash under his coat but I can't see anything. I'm wondering if it's a reaction to the flea treatment.

I brush him a couple of times a week and use the Furminator also. So it might be that his skin is sensitive from that as well. Though the sensitivity seems to be limited to the shoulder area where the treatment is applied and I brush him all over with particular attention to his hind quarters and "pantaloons".

I don't think I would use it any more. Seems like he is sore from it. If he is sensitive he might have a really bad reaction to it and you don't want that for him.

I use frontline if I have to and atleast in my area it does a good job on ticks. But I really hate using it.

Interesting.
Is this because of Justice's reaction to Advantix or just concerns about Frontline in general?
What do you recommend to clients for routine prophylactic flea control, if anything?
I'm sure you have discussed this here before, but don't recall having seen it.

Just on Justice I hate using it. I use Fipronil in the form of Pet Armor the last 2 years and no one has had any issues. I use it monthly in the spring/summer and every 3 months in the fall winter(for fleas) for all my dogs.

I don't have a private practice any more but I recommend fipronil. We don't have a huge local flea issue mostly ticks and it seems to do a good job. My friend, who lives in tick haven, tells me Advantix does not work on the ticks in her area(interesting) but Fipronil does. The only dog I have found ticks on in the last 3 years in my house is Justice 2 on his ear base. Ticks have been horrible this year.

For fleas at the shelter, we use either revolution or frontline depending on what we have on hand. Capstar if they are really infested on incoming. We get alot of dogs from the south and revolution does a better job on fleas in my observation.

Frontline is useless in the Mid-Atlantic. Might as well use vinegar.

The rest of my guys get nothing, because I'd rather have the occasional flea than perpetuate the "super-flea" that I am convinced we are developing.

Thanks Dr. Shelli. The comprehensive reply is appreciated.
For what its worth, the 2013 update on my flea and tick lecture is on my website and I can PM it to anyone interestd.
Be warned, it is MUCH longer. Much. :uhoh:

My Airedale cannot handle Advantix, he will get oozing hotspots wherever the medication was applied, and is very itchy. I assume it's the permethrin that's in it to control the ticks.

He has no problem with regular Advantage or with Frontline. I find Advantage to be more effective than Frontline. Luckily there are almost no ticks where I live, so the tick control is unnecessary.

Every dog is an individual!
