Red sheltie

i have to get good recent pics! my Lynn is lighter, but redder than your Bacca.

do you know if tall timber/banchory lines are prone to redness?

I am very confused about sable coloring...

so is Bailey a "red" sable?

She definitely has some red to her, but like my Bacca, its hard to tell if it will stick.

Here are a few more sites about "red" sables. I did find one site that had a dog that looked like a red, but they called it a golden. But I can't find the link again.

The 2nd link is about the Banchory line...so there you go! (Check out Lady Fair)

Hi Everyone,
The red sable, that we call pure-for sable we saw in the early to mid-90's in the Northeast through the Macdega dogs, notably, CH Magdega Sausalito, ROM.His sire was CH Magdega Tiburon, whose sire was CH Macdega Malibu. All really red dogs. Sausalito produced some beautiful dogs and gorgeous bitches for the Coens. Cindahope, and many other breeders used him. The next generation of really red dogs following that Sausalito lineage, were the pups by his son, CH Cindahope Trade Mark. It is the color I enjoy the most and try to breed for. My backyard is full of little red dogs!

Bacca comes down from that Sausilito, Trade Mark, Counterstrike, Alaris line, as does my Rabbit Run Maritime, aka Robbie.

.Two of my dogs were from the Macdega clan. Both very mahogonay sables and excellant showdogs before they were retired and turned over to me.

How do you determine what lines your dog "comes down from"? The most prominent lines I see in Bentley's pedigree are Jade Mist...but is that too recent to say that's where he "comes from"? I also see a couple Banchory, but those are pretty far back. I figure if you go back far enough you'll see a lot of the major breeders (Banchory, Barwoods, Macdega). And I see the illustrious Peter Pumpkin a couple times in Bentley's pedigree.

Just curious :)

I use this website which you probably already know about

http://www.pedigreelines.com/dog/show/name/cedar-sunset's-highland-hunter

It sometimes takes a bit of investigation and detective work as dogs are only registered on the site if their owner puts them there. So for instance, Bacca is not there, obviously, but his siblings are. So sometimes you need to follow the trail of siblings to piece it together.

I've only gone back 8 generations, but it was easy for Bacca since it was pretty complete already. I've only checked out part of Indy's because a link got broken and I need to try and come at it sideways (e.g. through siblings of a great grandparent...

It's fun, especially because many have actual photos of ancestors, so you can, in fact, see some of the trends.

p.s. Both Bacca and Robbie have Peter Pumpkin in the line somewhere as well, but I haven't yet traced it far enough back. Bacca also has Jade Mist line in there too.

Missjennygirl - I'm so glad your trying to stick to the reds....I just love the colour - my personal favourite - though "golden's come a close second! It's gorgeous!

I'm still a little confused about the terms "pure for sable" and "shaded" though - I think it means only sables that don't have "black" gene and therefore could only produce more sables? And may therefore be gold, red or otherwise. I believe there are shaded, pure for sables that may look like mahoghany sables. So "shaded" refers to some of the darker guard hairs, particularly around face and neck. But a true mahogany has the black gene. And therefore could produce a tri. Yes?

Bacca's red comes from both sides as he has Macdega and Cindahope on both his dam's and sire's side.

I just checked out Robbie's line....I noticed he shares not only the Alex connection but on their mom's side as well! Robbie's mom - Beauty Mark - share Macdega Glenhart, Town Cryer, Crystal and Gold with Bacca's mom, Rayna. Quite the little incestuous world we have!

Because of all this, a few weeks ago, I started looking in free "family tree" web-based software to see if there was some way for us to build our Sheltie's forums family tree (and see who is connected to who). Facebook has something, but I ran out of time and haven't gone back to this project yet. But it sure would be fun!

I went on this site and found Bailey's mom and dad. I was able to go back 8 generations

She has a lot of Jade Mist's and Macdega's.

Her father has Macdega Tiburon in his lineage.

Does this mean a lot of our dogs are distantly related?

Tiburon is Bacca's great, great, great grandfather (through his Dad, Alaris)

The Jade Mist is on Bacca's mother's side...the most recent being Beyond Tradition

So yes, we are most probably interelated in ways that would make our eyes spin!
