Reputable breeders in SW TX?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows any reputable breeders in SW TX?

I'm going to try and get my Sheltie through the rescue/rehome/shelter. But if that doesn't work, I will need to go through a breeder.

I have never gotten a dog from a breeder, so I really don't know how to start. I have seen some web sites for breeders in my area, but I don't really know how to tell a BYB from a reputable one.
 
The best way to check out whether a breeder listed in your area is reputable is to actually visit their home/kennel, ask lots of questions, and take a good look at how their dogs are kept.

A great place to start is with the American Shetland Sheepdog Association, including their page on finding a puppy.

You can find ASSA member breeders. While ASSA membership is not a guarantee, it does indicate that the breeder is involved in the sport of dogs (not just breeding puppies to make more puppies), is part of a community of breeders, and has pledged to a code of ethics.

You can also find local Sheltie clubs, which is also an excellent place to start. They will be able to connect you to breeders and guide you in choosing a reputable one.

I encourage you to consider widening your geographical search a bit. The best breeder for you may be a long drive (or even a plane ride) away.
 
Yep both my guys were found via ASSA though there is a ton of wonderful pups on here that were rescue and found via other methods.
 
I agree with what Tofu Pup recommended. That's where I started and where I found our local Sheltie club.

Our local club has a person responsible for keeping track of available pups and directing potential owners to breeders with puppies. She does a pre-screen before making the connection between potential owner and breeder and, of course, the breeder has final say regarding whether or not they want to work with the potential buyer.
 
I would also check out any area training clubs - obedience, agility, etc. And see where the dogs you liked came from. I didn't even know there were that many Shelties in the Waco area until I looked at training clubs. You're not exactly in the most densely populated area of the state (I remember how boring of a drive it is if you take the tollroad around Austin), you may have to drive towards DFW or Houston, or even beyond to find a good breeder that fits your goals, you fit their requirements, etc.

(I have no req's on what clubs to check out, DH's parents had a golden that never left their property except to visit family or the vet)

Texas Collie and Sheltie Rescue is based in Houston but they have fosters in different areas of the state. You may want to check them out.
