I had the same experience with liver failure and Rimadyl. I had a
Golden Retriever that had been diagnosed with arthritis and was put on Rimadyl. A few months later we had to put her down because of liver failure. I had no idea that liver failure was a side affect of Rimadyl when she was put on it nor was I told by my vet. I ran across an article on it after she was gone. I can't be absolutely sure that Rimadyl was the cause of her liver failure but I will always wonder.

The ONLY way I'd give this medication long term is if blood tests were part of the treatment.

With my Malamute and Finkie, the Rimadyl really helped with their arthritis and other issues. Before we even started with the medication, blood work was done to make sure the liver was healthy.

Once we started using it, our vet insisted on blood work to check for liver problems monthly at first, then every other month, then quarterly when no issues were detected. If there was even the slightest hint of a problem with the liver she would have had them off Rimadyl and onto something else right away.

Sialria vet really sounds like she understood this med. Possibly some vets might not? As I have posted, I was informed how this gal's golden passed away with liver problems from this med. My vets who I cherish did give my Lucky this med without testing his liver. I only gave it to him for two days, and kept him calm.

Mr. Zoomie ran out the door so fast on me, slid on ice, and pulled a tendon. He is fine and zooms around, but when there is ice we have a chat before he goes out the door. EASY! Lucky in no way acts like he is nine.
