River attacked by Golden Retriever!

So sorry you two went through this. It is so scary when it happens, and I, too, have sworn at other people for letting their dogs off leash (and usually I’m a very calm person). At my age I’ve decided no more Ms. Nice. Too bad if the other person is embarrassed. They should be! I had a dog on leash who once got attacked by an off leash dog who ran out of its yard. My dog needed 15 stitches!!
Glad you and River are OK!!

Thank you all for your kind words! It makes me feel better. River and I returned to the scene of the crime twice today on our walks and he doesn't seem frightened in any way. We haven't crossed paths with another dog yet so I don't know how that will go. I'm certainly looking over my shoulder a lot more. I'm just grateful it wasn't worse. If that was a coyote...I would have had no chance. It's dark in the mornings now, so I have had to change up our routine and start a little later at work. We also had issues in the classes we took with other bigger dogs sometimes. The instructor told us in the beginning to keep our dogs in a bubble, and I took that to heart. I was able to keep River focused on me, but others would let their dogs stray over to us, and the teacher did not really correct that. I too have learned I have to stick up for my dog and not care about being polite to rude people. Sheltie people are the best!

Thanks goodness you and River are OK! It must have been very scary. I've had a similar experience a couple of time - fortunately without any bad results. Makes me want to carry mace or bear spray - as much for use on irresponsible owners as protection against aggressive dogs. Now I'm just venting.

I always worry that because Gavin is extra vulnerable with his limp/bad leg/wheelchair that dogs we meet at fort funston or beach would take advantage of him, but so far we have had the opposite happen. Dogs are pretty gentle and people are extra vigilant in making sure their dog doesn't bother him. I have had to reassure owners that Gavin isn't fragile and that he wants to greet other dogs.

This is one of my pet peeves! Pennsylvania has a leash law, but apparently it is not enforced. There are always going to be people that believe they are "special" and the laws don't apply to them and their dogs. It always seems to be the ones with the big dogs too. I am always prepared to pick up my dogs when I see an unleashed dog in the vicinity. Better safe than sorry. My other pet peeve is people who don't pick up after their dogs.:cautious:

Maybe I should teach River to limp on command? :) He is a trick dog after all.:peeking:

I hate when people don't pick up after their dogs also! I should have picked River up when I had the first intuition that that dog was trouble, but it happened so fast, and I thought the lady was holding the leash. In replaying the scene in my head I don't think she was paying attention either. She was looking down, maybe at her phone.

I have lost count of how many times this has happened on our walks. Mostly from folks that think it is perfectly OK for their dogs to be unleashed in their front yard. Their dogs dash across the street, and the owners apologize for their dogs behavior. I usually tell them they will be very sorry if their dog gets hit crossing the street. Fortunately, we have never been attacked, but I now carry a collapsible baton, as sooner or later it is bound to happen.

I am sorry to say, these people are idiots! I have taken my current and previous boys for the same route for walks. There is a small white dog that at least four times has run across the street to meet my boys. Granted it is not aggressive at all... but, I keep making the same comment to the owner as she comes across to collect him... “your dog should not be off lead... it could have been hit by a car or truck!” All she says is sorry!

There is no fixing stupid!

I'm lucky -- no problems so far. Has anyone considered taking a phone pic of the person and their dog once things are calm and telling the offender that you'll be sending their picture to Animal Control, along with the location of the offense?

That sounds scary! Loose dogs are why I carry a sturdy steel walking stick on dog walks, not sure it would be much help when one is tangled up in the offending dog’s long lead tho.

I’m glad you’re both okay.
