River attacked by Golden Retriever!

I always worry that because Gavin is extra vulnerable with his limp/bad leg/wheelchair that dogs we meet at fort funston or beach would take advantage of him, but so far we have had the opposite happen. Dogs are pretty gentle and people are extra vigilant in making sure their dog doesn't bother him. I have had to reassure owners that Gavin isn't fragile and that he wants to greet other dogs.

If it were me and any dog tried to be aggressive toward Gavin, my first instinct would be to dive on top of him to protect him. Not to hurt him of course but put my body between him and the threat!
Better if I got a bite than our special boy... Just sayin... I feel for Gavin like I did for Mr. Chance... VERY protective...

That sounds scary! Loose dogs are why I carry a sturdy steel walking stick on dog walks, not sure it would be much help when one is tangled up in the offending dog’s long lead tho.

I’m glad you’re both okay.

That’s a good idea. I had a pit bull type dog charge us once from behind! I never saw the dog, I think it was hiding in some shrubs stalking us. When our backs were to it, it charged right at the back of my legs and Shelby. I almost fell over, Shelby actually tried to protect us, I screamed and it ran away. It was very scary, that is the only time I ever saw Shelby show any aggression.

Fortunately Shelby did not suffer any physical or emotional harm. We live very rural so you never know what you might find when out on a walk.

Wow an attack from behind has to be so much worse! I've noticed in the last few days River has become more cautious about other dogs. Not scared or in a bad way...maybe he just didn't realize that some would not be his friend. So that's a silver lining. Glad you and Shelby were not hurt.
