RN Title

In AKC, a novice course has to have 3-5 stationary signs. A stationary sign is one where they have to perform a sit, down, front & finish, etc. Everything else is directional or a pace change.

Front and finish, for novice rally, is about the only thing you'll probably need to train on top of what your dog already knows. Since Bentley already has agility titles, and you mentioned he heels, he will already be able to do the heeling on loose leash, changes of pace, sits, and downs. As far as everything else goes, it's mostly just learning the signs.
Rally novice really is easy, so long as your dog has basic obedience down. Athena and I did a 4 week class on it, went out, and got 3/3 legs for our RN. With what Bentley knows, I would think you could easily go through the RA and RE as well. I believe the only other things you'd have to teach would be a stand stay (unless he already has one), and to back.
In AKC rally novice, you can use both hand signals and a verbal. However, in AKC *obedience* you can only give one command or the other.

Thanks for the answers, everyone.

I was sort of hoping that this was something I could get through with both dogs. They both have semi-heels (they learned them in obedience class and I haven't practiced them since...but I think they'll remember quickly if I practiced a couple times a day).

I may try learning all the signs from youtube like 3stars mentioned.

As long as they have a good loose leash and heel, I think you should be able to make it through Novice pretty easily.

I sent you the AKC Rally Rules (check your gmail).
This is what I did. I started at #1 and saw if I could do it. Then 2, 3, 4, etc. I marked which ones I needed to either work on or train. i.e. I needed to retrain his front, finish right and left. And I needed to work on his sit or down, walk around. Since he hates me walking around him.

I think you should be able to train a lot of this really fast since I know you have a "touch". Except for the "heeling" Koji would learn fast. Too bad a lot of it is heeling, lol.

Good luck! I say go for it.

Thanks, Cheryl! I may give it a shot. Gives me a goal with the dogs during the day.

Did you send the email already? I haven't gotten it.

Was looking for threads on rally and found this one from Ashley and it had all my questions. Zak's trainer suggested today that I do rally and there is a show in May. Yikes...makes me nervous!! But it would be fun for us to do together and would be good for him.
