You are right. Rocky is my first fur baby so I can be overly emotional whenever he isn't doing well. But we are very, very blessed that it isn't cancer! We received the results of his blood test today. Low thyroid levels and high liver enzymes. Cushings disease is a concern. They are doing another thyroid test to determine hypothyroidism and soon, an abdominal ultrasound to determine Cushings. Our vet says if his lameness doesn't improve after thyroid medication, we will need to see a neurologist.
I've read some info on natural remedies. Two of which are green lipped mussel for arthritis and milk thistle for liver health. Any thoughts or input on these??
Low thyroid can account for so many "off" issues...if the dx is confirmed treatment is simply a low cost pill (Soloxine or Thyroxin) and the turn around is really good. Thankfully, this is an issue that is easily treatable and doesn't seem to impact longevity.
I would ask your vet why an abdominal ultrasound for Cushings. Cushings is typically initially dx'd via an ACTH blood test. The Pet Web Library This link is an excellent source for almost all dog/cat illnesses...check out their info on Cushing's.
I have a little rescue doggie with an enlarged liver and she is on Denamarin daily. Liver tissue is repairable so there is excellent hope for good results. You may be given a special diet also to help support the liver.
Green lipped muscle is excellent...we use Super Snouts Joint Powder which is 100% green lipped muscle. Just be aware if you decide to use the powder that it really stinks! There are many other excellent natural treatments for arthritis and others will share their favorites.
