Rotating Dog Food Question

This thread has gone off topic and even became a little heated at times, so let me summarize...

Rotating foods can be very beneficial to a dog's digestive tract. It can reduce the chances of developing a food allergy / intolerance. It increases different bacteria in the gut, so a dog can digest many different proteins. This can reduce stomach sensitives to new foods. It also gives a dog a nice variety, so they don't eat the same thing every day. Although, I'm sure some of those food hogs wouldn't care.

There are many options to rotate food... You can stick with one brand and rotate between their different formulas. You can stick with 2 or 3 brands and different formulas, but always use the same ones. OR you can use a different brand and different formula every time you switch, so your dog never eats the same bag twice. Just make sure you give your dog enough time to transition between bags.

How often to rotate? That seems to be up in the air. My guess would be not to rotate too often or you might upset the digestive tract and not to use one food for too long or it will defeat the whole purpose of rotating.

Is a rotating diet for everyone? NO! Like most other things, what works for some doesn't work for others. This is something that you must decide if the benefit outweighs the risks. For a normal and healthy dog, it usually does.
If your dog has an extremely sensitive stomach and you're happy you finally found one food that he doesn't get sick from, then rotating may not be the best thing for him. If your dog has an illness that can be effected by certain ingredients or nutrient levels, then you might want to stick to the one or two foods that you know works.

Again, like everything else, rotating comes down to what you think is best for your dog. Whether or not someone rotates, I think the fact that you are questioning your dog's diet says you care about your dog and are concerned about what they eat. :biggrin2:
