Sadie has loose bowels again

I'm so sorry to hear this, Ontario. I can sympathize from Pixie's months of the runs. You are absolutely right, the Hills is crap; however, sometimes you have to do what you have to do and just close your eyes. My vet had me put Pix on the Hills low residue food for a period during her bouts and it did seem to help some. In any event, after all you've been through, it's worth a try. We still feed our guys Hill's ID formula when they have upset tummies and that's just as bad. :dead:

Maybe Sadie's system just needs a total rest, even from good food, and this will help her heal. In any event, all our fingers and toes are crossed. Please keep us posted. :(
 
I changed my mind about trying the food

This has been going on for 5 long months, I decided that enough is enough and opted to have all of the expensive blood testing done, instead of trying her on yet another food. If she's having gastrointestinal problems the blood work will confirm it. I still doubt that it has to do with food allergies but maybe I've been wrong.

I just don't want her to be sick anymore or for me to have to keep cleaning up diarrhea :cry:

Poor Sadie.

I'd love to have the results by tommorow but I'm guessing I'll have them by next Tuesday or Wednesday (Monday is Thanksgiving in Canada)
 
I don't think you are wrong for not wanting to change the food again. You have tried several different things already. If you do not get adequate answers back from your vet or they show inconclusive please take Sadie to another vet. Another vet may think of some things that your vet has not already thought of. Sometimes two sets of eyes are better than one or brains for that matter. I hope she gets better soon for both of you!
 
Sadie's Blood Test Results

Sadie's blood work came in yesterday and thankfully she does not have Addison's Disease or any gastrointestinal diseases. She did say that her pancreatic enzymes were elevated though, which is not normal. She said this is not necessarily indicative of anything, but it could mean that she's been having low grade pancreatitis all these months. Her solution is to try her on some special food that is supposed to help with such a problem. She said if that didn't work the next thing to try would be low dose cortisone, I guess to try and get the inflammation under control.

I had hoped for a more diffinitive answer (especially since blood work isn't cheap!) but at least she found nothing serious and we have a course of action.

In the mean time her diarrhea has again miraculously gone away on its own so she's fine for now
 
That is good news, Ontario! At least it's something you can deal with worst case with meds. Sadie is still on the St. Francis list. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving up there!
 
So Far So Good

Its a month today since Sadie's last bowel attack and she's been on the vet food for 3 weeks.

She's been the opposite, a bit constipated, so I've been trying to encourage her to drink more water since she's not allowed anything but this vet food. I was worried that she might not like the vet food but she loves it (had to buy a special bowel to slow down her eating), which helps with the fact that she's not allowed treats, she's happy to inhale a few pieces of kibble as a treat!

I was not very keen on starting Sadie on this vet food. My vet seemed to think this food would calm down any inflammation in her digestive system. In my opinion the ingredients look terrible, its almost entirely made up of filler and there's no meat of any kind in it. My vet claimed that the ingredients were broken down to a molecular level so that Sadie's body wouldn't recognize the ingredients for what they really are. I guess she was right, no flare ups in a month, In the 5 months before the food she didn't go for more than 3 weeks with out loose bowels. For anyone interested, she's on Royal Canin Veterinary Hypoallergenic HP 19.

Hopefully I can take her off of this food eventually and put her back on a holistic food!
 
Update on Sadie

Its been almost 7 weeks and Sadie is doing very well. No diarrhea or vomiting :biggrin2:

I've been adding approx. 1 cup of water to her food and her bowels are now much better, no more constipation. Plus the water slows down her eating a great deal which helps a lot too.

At the 5 week mark I gave her back her raw hide, she was missing it terribly, especially since she wasn't allowed any treats, even carrots (her favorite).

Tomorrow I'm going to start giving her carrots again and see how she is.

We have a vet appointment on Dec. 15th so I'll ask her if we can either start her on another hypoallergenic food with meat (one that she recommends) or if I can put her back on her old food, which is also hypoallergenic.
