Sammy @ The Beach - 5 Months Old

Thanks for asking Julia, I have actually been slowing down on introducing new commands to Sammy. We still do our daily training session, we're at about session #100 now, but I am spending a lot of time reviewing commands that she knew already.

For one I am running out of ideas of new things to teach, but I also realize she will forget stuff that I taught her before if I do not review them, or she gets confused about what I am trying to get her to do.

I am working on teaching her to become a calm dog when we're outside, I know she is capable of doing so, but she does get overly excited and distracted easily still. We have also practicing some of our tricks outside now that it's warm here. My long term goal for Sammy is to train her become a therapy dog in hope we can bring some smile to those in need.

Sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing by getting her confident in what she has learned. I'm sure you will achieve your aim of Sammy becoming a Therapy Dog. :smile2: It would be great to see a video of her sometime. :yes:
 
:biggrin2: Thanks for posting the link. Great to have a video record of her progress - I never have the patience to upload/edit the videos myself!

I watched #98 (heeling) and she is coming along very well. Now she is doing some nice straight sits in the correct heel position you don't need to click her for 'lesser efforts' - so when she is not right next to you, withold the click. That way you are telling her that there is only one place that is correct and that is the only place she'll get her click and treat. She'll cotton on pretty quickly.

Also watched #83 (review) and I was very impressed with her 'tricks', you have done incredibly well with her and should be feeling very proud of her progress. The treats on paws trick was super and I'm jealous as we haven't cracked that yet! :wink2:

Thanks for the advise Julia, you are absolutely correct, Sammy does know to sit straight and tight if I bring out the bucket (from pivot training), I will try what you have suggested the next time.

For the "treat on paw" trick, originally I wanted to do "treat on nose", but she wouldn't hold still yet when we started a couple months ago, so I settled with the paws, I will probably go back trying the nose a little later.

Tonight we're gonna start "cross paw" exercise. :)
