Sandstorm met up with horrible chocolate lab at our pond

That's a shame Karen. Labs are headstrong dogs and do need plenty of training. With the gundog breeds most are very dog social and will approach other dogs and people, many responsible owners (self-included) don't consider this acceptable behaviour especially around dogs that are on lead. It is something I have to constantly work on with Cadbury but of course other people are less bothered.

Some people also allow their dogs to behave too boisterously - humping other dogs is NEVER acceptable. I hate that and my lad has been the victim of it too.

On the other hand you can have mellow choc labs like my boy, who as soon as he meets a small dog or puppy crouches down so they are taller than him and shows them his tummy. Doesn't hump them. Doesn't push them about. And doesn't run too fast and knock them over.

Then of course you have the nasty little dogs who think its their place in life to run up to big dogs and bite and snap at them.

You just can't win.

Domino has been attacked by slightly bigger dogs twice in the last month...both times the owner said "Oh I don't know what's gotten into him.....he's never done this before". YEAH RIGHT!! If you can't control your dog don't let him run around off leash.

Domino loves his off-leash time (we have a great off-leash park behind our house) and he has made a few great friends so I am determined not to let this stop us from enjoying ourselves but I am definately much more alert as to any new dogs that are approaching us now and he is promptly back on leash if a new face appears.

Inconsiderate dog owners are definately one of my hates! It's a shame that a few bad owners can ruin a fun time out for the rest of us. You shouldn't have to feel on edge taking Sandstorm for a nice walk to the pond.

I have ALWAYS given my dogs voices... My GSD had a german accent!?

Smudge has a gangster accent, and Fluffy has a southern accent. I thought I was the only one who did that! Hysterical!

Exactly. Big dogs are ALWAYS the ones that aren't on leash. Then the little dogs are always mean and snappy. It's annoying how their owners always seem to think it is cute.

The owner of the obnoxious Lab said jokingly that he is the juvenile delinquent of dogs. Ha Ha Ha. I haven't been back to the pond, but I have been going there for 25 years, I'm not going to stop now. Unfortunately I know alot of labs similar to this one- dogs that just don't get enough excersize. Also because Cape Cod is a peninsula isolated from bigger towns and cities, there are alot of BYB. People are unwilling to travel to buy a good dog, and there is an attitude that any travel time over 1/2 an hour is a long way away!!

Really? I travelled 6 hours for Cadbury!!

The other thing is people with bouncy big dogs sometimes think that all dogs are like that so what does it matter if their dog bounces up to a small dog that is scared? He's just being friendly.

Cadbury Doo Dah Day, is not allowed to do that. I always ask other people if their dog would like to play before I let him off and I call him back if he starts to head over to other dogs I don't know.

You are so right and you should have heard the stick I got when I used to take Cadbury to the park and keep him on lead because I didn't trust his recall. I was made to feel like a horrible dog owner, so much so I actually started avoiding the parks. It was awful, and in truth those people who's dogs were off lead were not under control and some were even aggressive. I actually heard that one of these people who had criticised me had their boxer cross run over to a small dog and maul it!

Four hours up and four hours back to get Layla and Bits. Beckon was "delivered to the door." Annie caught a ride halfway across country. My next Sheltie will mean driving from Washington DC to St. Augustine -- and I'd go twice as far for a Norwood Sheltie!!

We drove 3 hours to NH to just VISIT Sandstorm, and then again 3 weeks later to pick him up. Cape Cod is like that though- our son lives in Attleboro, MA, 1 1/2 hrs away, and people comment on how far that is (my mother included).

back home my neighbours up the road had this rabid pomeranian that was never on a leash and would run out the driveway growling and snapping at Iris, I yelled at the owners once and they didnt care so we couldnt go that way up the road... people are silly, hopefully they wont be there when you go next time!
