You mentioned that you wanted to put Smudge on wet food to help him gain weight.
My vet once told me that wet food is actually better for weight LOSS because of the high water content, but it may depend on the brand. (I know it seems backwards because it is so much more appealing to dogs, it must be bad for them, right??!
)
The draw back is that it is not as good for their teeth.
Do consider this when you look into wet foods.

I agree with Barb. Most wet foods have a high water content.
Maybe you can increase his amount of kibble...if over feeding him doesn't give him loose stool?

Yep..thats the general rule.Canned stuff contains alot of water for processing.
You may want to maybe up the amount you feed,pver the course of the day. But just keep track of his stools..as loose stools mean he is being over fed,if nothing else is wrong,health wise.
Although,I do know that in cats..if they are not water drinkers,canned cat food is recommended at least a once a day,to get some nourishment down them in the way of moisture.As cats can get urinary issues quite easily. (I know off track sorry)...

Is there a way to save a can of dog food without it stinking to high heaven>I want to give Smudge a half a can of canned a day. First because he needs to gain weight, and secondly because it will be easier for him to get his Vibrant Pets in, I think.
So how do you save a can of food once it's been opened? I'm guessing one can would be too much in one go. I think (but I'm not sure) that they also had the TOTW cans at the Tractor Supply place. I'm going either tomorrow or Thursday to see.
Regarding the weight gain:
Try giving him a tablespoon or so (more is always good lol) of regular cottage cheese in the morning. Cheaper than wet dog food, and helps with weight gain. A teaspoon of peanut butter a day will also help.

Since it takes forever for mine to get through a can, I actually dump it into a plastic container with the pop lock top. Since I serve the Merricks, I need to pick and choose what I want, so it works well for my needs.

Baggies work. Plastic containers with a screw on lid.

I give mine canned in the evening - half a small can each. I was also told canned is better for weight loss because it makes them fuller quicker. But when I was trying to get a growth spurt out of Tully the vet suggested mixing in a little kibble with her moist food for extra calories.
Both mine would be very disappointed if they didn't get a moist food for dinner (cooked or canned). Tully will often skip her kibble but never her moist dinner. Its a nice change for a fussy eater.

Is it okay to keep canned food in the refrigerator after each use? My little puppy only goes through maybe one can a week. I put a tsp of canned with each meal and cover back up with a plastic lid and refrigerate. Is the leaving in the can unhealthy?

I think the consensus is that if you want weight gain (and I'm not convinced yet that you do, btw) that switching a partial wet diet is not the way.
I personally think that Smudge is an appropriate weight. I think you are just waiting for his fur to grow in. Be patient, it make take a couple more years! What you perceive as low weight may be simply waiting to get the full Sheltie hair growth.
My son keeps telling me that Bacca looks skinny! yikes! He's 30 lbs! It's just that the stupid groomer trimmed him back too much and he has no undercoat. (I'm blessed!)
