Saw my first USDAA trial

And I do mean "saw" not "in". lol. I've always wanted to watch a more higher level agility competition. USDAA was about 45 miles away from my house this weekend, so off I went.

I have to say, it's amazing. My instructor gave me Greg Derrett's videos to watch. And all I can say is, "great dog, shame about the handler". I alwasy thought agility was more about training the dog, but I'm beginning to see how much you need to know about your dogs ability, to be a great handler. So many of them, during the Grand Prix, weren't giving their dogs any commands to hit an object, or to take the teeter when the tunnel was in front of them after a jump. ie. they'd wait until the dog was over the bar, on the ground, before giving them the command for the teeter, as the dog was in its way to the tunnel. It's amazing, how things like that, can really throw you off.

Disclaimer: not saying I'd do any better, but this helps me see how much I need to pay attention to my dog AND myself, versus just hoping my dog will do what I want when I want. kwim?

It was a great day. I can't wait to compete. I'm sure I"ll be a mess, but as long as Koji has fun, I can deal with my craziness. LOL.

I forgot to add this part....
At one point, a woman came up to us and started talking about Koji. She had one of her Shelties with her. I asked how many she had. She had 4. LOL. She asked me where I got him, I told her Daval. She said at one time, Daval had the top Sheltie in the country in agility. Her name was Peppermint Patty. Let's hope Koji got some of that. It just made me feel good that 1. someone knew Daval and 2. Daval had the top agility dog. (she said this was awhile back, so I have no clue when). I think I'll email my breeder. She'll be happy to hear about her pups.

Agility

USDAA is tons of fun and not boring like AKC wich only offers two sometimes 3 classes. The number one 12 inch sheltie in the nation is owned by Joan Myer and his name is Neal and the number one 16 inch sheltie is Rush owned by Paulette Swartzenruber.

I found some info about Patty. I guess she ruled the 16" from 94-02. It was fun watching the Shelties run. Koji is so large, I'm probably going to be 22" class. Ugh, will that put me in with all the crazy fast BC's? I'm so glad they have the "performance" levels. lol.

I'll have to go read about Neal and Rush.

That is so neat that you got to see a competition; even more wonderful that you are preparing to be IN one!

Where are these event calendars posted so that uninformed, uninitiated nobodies like me can learn more about agility and SEE it. I tried to go to an event that was here in Asheville about 4-5 years back, but it was flooded out (we had the aftermath of two hurricanes come thru and hit the 200 year high mark for the French Broad River).

The Blue Ridge Agility club will be hosting an event 5/8/09 - 5/10/09 at the WNC ag center (fairgrounds) in Fletcher, less than 30 miles from my house.

Thanks so much for the link!

It's great that you got to see a trial. You can learn so much from just watching people.

I've been fortunate to see a few trials - 2 AKC and 1 CPE. I also got to work as a ring volunteer for the CPE trial since my agility club was the host.

Granite, most of the agility organizations have their schedules posted on their web sites:
CPE: http://www.k9cpe.com/events.htm
NADAC: http://www.nadac.com/afrm/trial-calendar.asp (My agility club, Splash 'n Dash in Pittsburgh, PA, has a NADAC trial at the end of April. Unfortunately I'm out of town that weekend. :()
TDAA (Teacup dogs - dogs 16 inches or less): http://www.k9tdaa.com/TDAAevents.htm

k9kreationz, already provided the USDAA link. (If any of you live close to Pittsburgh, Splash 'n Dash has a USDAA trial planned for April 4 & 5.)

Hope that helps. :)
