scared gavins dotage is ending

And when you are ready, I am happy to share what contacts I have in the CA Sheltie world.

Believe me, sometimes they don't come at a "convenient" time. I was offered Faith two weeks after Asta unexpectedly passed, when I was still reeling with shock and grief. I almost said no. But SO glad I didn't.

That said, you'll have a lot on your plate with your mom coming up. Less stress on you the better, since you've been heaped with it for so long.

Thank You. right now I feel like I am drowning at times. It is soul crushing in a way I didn't anticipate. But everyone who knew him is telling me how much he loved me, how obvious is was, and I start bawling again..

The way you molded your life around Gavin's needs, trying to give him the best life possible took up so much time and energy, and when that's abruptly gone, it leaves you feeling unanchored. You had the deepest of bonds, so it is now the deepest of hurts. Take it literally one minute at a time for now. :hugs

I'm very glad you're open to another Sheltie. There's no doubt you will grieve Gavin for a year, but it will get a bit better with time, as others have said and you establish some new routines. It's the routines suddenly gone that make this so much harder. As Sharon said, maybe try something new for a bit...change your mealtime, or place in the house. Do something you don't normally do, or haven't had time for. When the time comes that you are ready for a new little ball of fur in your life, it will be a great distraction and a huge help with filling the time that's empty now. You will always miss Gavin, but you'll see him in the next one in little ways, which is comforting too. For now, give yourself time to grieve and ignore anyone who says you shouldn't. Above all, be kind to yourself.

Right now I need to get a new car.
Mom's surgery will hopefully be in April or June, and I will be with her for 2 months.
So I will be able to get a puppy in July-September time frame at the earliest.
once her surgery is scheduled I will have a better handle on things.

I am saving everything I can.
the wheelchair is already gifted.
A friend will take the food.
Just need a taker on the sentinel and milk thistle

Cindy, everyone's journey is personal and unique. You can't yet know when you will be ready to love again. I welcomed Asher three months after bidding Layla farewell, but that didn't mean I stopped mourning her. Most days I smile, remembering something funny and endearing she did or marvel at the comfort she brought to so many. Yet there are moments when I miss her with every fiber of my being.

Grief is like the ocean. Right now, you're engulfed by the crashing waves of grief. The storm will pass, and the waves subside. At length, the sea of sorrow will calm, and you'll start to see the beauty beyond the overwhelming surge of loss. Days may come when a wave of grief washes ove you, but by then, you will have learned to swim through the feelings -- maybe not alone.
That’s absolutely the best analogy I’ve heard explaining grief! And so true! Even now 3 years later I have moments when I look at Riley’s picture I miss him deeply but it’s not as intense, I also remember the good and happy memories as well which helps to lessen the pain.

Dear St. Francis, on your doorstep sits a beautiful Sheltie. In his seventeen years, this gorgeous boy taught more people how to live life to the fullest than a thousand philosophers. Gavin is courage personified, battling cancer with a joie de vivre that scoffed at the idea that illness should get in the way of an abundant life. I know he's going to be a great help to you in bringing comfort to new arrivals to that heavenly Bridge. Right now, though, his Mom is grieving so deeply that it seems the sun will never shine again. Please, bring her comfort and peace. Help her to see that, like Layla, Gavin's work has not ended. Joyful memories of his life will continue to brighten everyone he touched. Grant her peace, and help Gavin whisper to her that she made every single day of his life a poem and a song. May the Good Shepherd bring solace to us all as we bid Gallant Gavin farewell.
In His name we ask,
Amen
