Senior in NJ

How awful!!!!!! Perhaps we should consider taking these people somewhere when they're old, because they won't be as cute as the new people who replace them (said with tongue in cheek - mostly)

I'm not even saying it with tongue in cheek, HOW DARE THEY! This beautiful older gentleman has to be so very afraid and confused, wondering what he did and where "his humans" are. I'm feeling all of this, :(, so I can only imagine what Steve must be feeling. If he could understand he might not be so ready to be back in that family. Shame on them! :gaah

amen!!!!!!!! and I believe it would be the proper karma...you ditched your pet in favor of newbie, time to reap what you sowed...

I love the seniors too & would NEVER do this to my pet. Let's just hope they don't have kids that see this as a way to treat Mom & Dad when they get old.

Right now I am caring for Amy. She is a 16 year old rat terrier that has been with my friends since she was a puppy. They are getting a divorce & the wife can't have pets at her new place & the husband is at his wits end because she messes in the house now. He was going to have her put to sleep because he is going to sell the house & couldn't have her messing when he wasn't there. I said NO WAY & she is now with me. Yes, she has messed in my house 1 or 2 times but nothing bad. I have 3 others inside so what's 1 more? Amy doesn't have much longer but she'll have a safe place until her time here is over.

Bless you for coming to Amy's rescue!
My gosh, I just do not understand the lack of compassion these days.

My life would not be worth living if it were not for the love my seniors.

St Francis is smiling on you lasheltie! :hugs

Amy is no doubt reacting to the stress of her pack breaking apart...blessings on you for stepping up and doing this for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind comments. I do dog rescue & the rewards are wonderful. Just knowing that another one is safe & cared for is a gift. There will come a day when I may be no longer as "cute" or easy to live with. I would hate to know that there was no safe place for me to grow old & be happy.

When my senior sheltie ended up at the emergency vet hospital last year for a few days the clinic staff and i got to talking after a particular family left and refused treatment (weird cuz they brought dog there). They were saying hiw often people bring in dogs to euthanize cuz they got a new puppy... Even if dog doesn't need to be. when my mom worked at spca so many were dumped due to health issues or old age. her "favorite" was the lady who relinquished her cat "because she got new carpet and the cat's color no longer matched". Then thought she could turn around and adopt a new, coordinating cat. My senior sheltie is hitting 15 and i have enjoyed his senior years as much as his youth.

people are just fickle creatures, the carpet deal is quite disturbing, but see, it wasn't so much a friend/companion as it was an accessory. I think that is more the norm...pets are just a fixture, or accessory in some households. You can't fix "stupid" and it is the pets that suffer, sigh.

This breaks my heart. How can you have a Sheltie for 15 years and give him up for a puppy? I just do not get it. I would have given anything to have Cody 15 years!

I don't understand people, I really don't. A dog, heck - a PET is NOT some trinket you throw away when it breaks.

I brought a 7 month old Edan home to a 14 year old Finnish Spitz. Getting rid of our Finnkie was the FURTHEST thing from our mind; in fact she went with us the first time we met Edan to see how she's handle it. She was family not some decoration in our home. (Edan turned out to be the best thing for her. It re-engaged her with the family after loosing our Malamute-mix the year before.)

I really wish there was a way to ban people from having pets when they do stuff like this.
