Sheltie Forum Pups Spring/Summer 2014

Bonnie is 16 weeks old today. She knows sit, down, look (at me), stay, okay (release), come, up (onto lounge) and fetch. Although some better than others. The next ones I'll have to include are heel, stand, leave it and drop.

I notice some of you say your pups can 'wait' as well as 'stay', what's the difference?
Wait is stay in position until I give you the next command

Stay is stay in position and relax until I come back and release you. I will not ever call out of a stay.

Funny -- wait and stay are the other way round at our school.

Wait is stay in the spot but you may sit, stand, or down or switch position til release.

Stay is remain in whatever I put you in -- sit, stand, or down -- until I release and try to move as little as possible.

For us wait is really just a very short stay - so sit and wait while I fill the food bowl, get the leash and put on your collar, step outside the door first...

Yes stay is the same to us. Formal, dont move at all. But nothing will happen from a stay so relax mentally, I will come back to you and release you. Usually with the release word and a touch on the chest.

Wait is the same except it is an active stay. It means something is going happen soon be alert for the next command. Come, fetch, go out, start running a course etc

With neither command can the dog change position on their own. If they where left in a sit they stay in a sit, etc.

We visited mama Ash today and played with sister Clover. Very fun time had by all.

Here is a picture of them. R TO L Clover, Ash and Celtic. Ash is Birch and Spruce's(Toffeemom's) litter mate.

I lost a tooth! I lost a tooth! Molar! Mom found it and put it in my scrapbook. She has a lot of Shay's teeth. I wonder how many she will find of mine!

Does the tooth fairy come to my house?

Callan has learned a lot of commands, but whether he chooses to acknowledge them if pretty iffy!

Interestingly "stay" is usually the most reliable. That's good! Because of all commands, this covers a multiple of sins! It means...stop so I can get the plastic out of your mouth, grab you to put you in your pen, stop chasing squirrels, etc.

Am thinking about getting a trainer. Not because HE Is bad! But I am the one not regimented in enforcing puppy 101. I need the regimen, but I can be so darned lazy! :o
