Kidney failure
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and wanted to comment on my experience dealing with kidney failure in dogs. Our dog Trixie was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure on September 6, 2012. Our vet gave her 2-3 weeks to live. The vet sent us home and said to enjoy the last few days or weeks with her. We were devastated, but not willing to accept it. We went to a second vet and heard the same thing. Still not willing to accept it we took her to a third vet and this time we found a knowledgeable and caring vet that was willing to work with us to give Trixie the best quality of life for however long she lived. I've learned that many vets just don't have the experience dealing with kidney failure. Also, after searching the internet we found a yahoo group called K9Kidneys. What a godsend! This group is made up of thousands of individuals all over the world dealing with kidney failure in their dogs and is run by several knowledgeable moderators. They were able to make excellent suggestions that was extremely beneficial. I would HIGHLY recommend this group if your dog is going thru this terrible disease. Trixie passed away March 9,2012 at the age of 8yrs 8 mo. She lived another 6 quaility months after her diagnosis. We miss her dearly, but are very greatfull for the extra time we had with her. I hope this helps others dealing with this disease. Take care and hug your Sheltie today.
