Sheltie lifespan

My first passed at the young age of 4. I know that is not the regular life expectancy of any other relatively healthy sheltie, so will be praying for much much longer with Precious. <3

Hollie was just shy of 14 when we had her put to sleep. She had very bad gallbladder disease and was in liver failure as a result. Knowing what I know now she probably had gallbladder issues her entire life, by the time it was diagnosed we couldn't do anything about it. I still kick myself for not realizing it years earlier, I should have been more forcefull with the vet. The last few years she was almost completely deaf and was having trouble seeing. Poor thing would get very startled if you would touch her when she was sleeping. But I am very blessed to have had her in our lives for all tbkse years.

We were just talking about this last night, but it pertained to Earnhardt. I know not sheltie, but he is going to be 9 in May.

Very interesting thread though,.as we often wonder about the average age.

Labs are quite common in private practice. The clinics I worked for saw a lot of 10yrs-11yrs Labs, the 12yrs were not as common but not unusual and 13yr didn't see lot of them and 14+ pretty rare.

That being said my childhood Lab lived to be 14yrs, my brothers wife's Lab 16 yrs and my Dad'd current Lab is 12ish(rescue could be older) and my brother's Lab will be 12 yr in April(he has epilepsy since 6 months and on Phenobarb) but except for the fact he is white with age one would mistake him for 7-8yrs.

Thsnk you for the info Dr. Shelli. Other than the severe hip dysplasia,he is in pretty good health. Although getting very grey. He's aging gracefully.

We had 2 Shelties. Our first , a male is now 16 years and five months. He is almost deaf and eyesight is not good either but he still gets around and appears to be suffering no pain. Our female, we had to put down a couple of months ago. She was 12 and a half. Kidney failure

My sheltie growing up passed at - I think- 13 from organ failure. He had been on a downhill slide after hitting 11, his hearing was definitely gone and he was just "off" (would forget where home is, that sort of thing).

My aunt's 3 shelties passed at 12-14 (all obedience/agility and pampered) but I'm not sure from what.

Hmm, I don't think I've seen this thread before, so I'll give my 2 cents :smile2:

We put our Lacy down right before her 16th birthday. She had severe arthritis but really was just old and her body was starting to shut down. No major issues or anything, so I'd say that 14-16 is common in a normal Sheltie without major health issues like cancer or anything.

Smokey was around 12 when we put him down. He had a tumor in his nasal cavity and was sneezing blood constantly :(

Callie was 9 but that was a mental issue that I won't delve into here and now, but she was physically healthy.

And now we have Trax and Maverick and I don't plan on losing them for a very very long time :wink2:

The first sheltie I had any experience with was a dog that was rescued out of a car by people who became "Uncle Bill" and "Aunt Audrey" to me. I was about 10 years old at the time so almost 50 years ago. Dunko - they gave him his name after they smashed the window of the car and carried him to the tub and started to cool him down with tepid water - was fully mature when they got him and he lived another 8 years so I guess he would have been about 13ish. He crawled up on Aunt Audrey's bed and passed away one night - the only time he came onto the bed.
I can still hear Uncle Bill, that wirey little man, telling the owners of the car and dog how he was going to put a post up the guy's arse for being so stupid as to let that dog sit in a car in the summer heat. They handed over the ownership of the dog and never made a police complaint about the broken window. Bless you Uncle Bill.

Your Uncle Bill, in my book, is a member of a special group of people, for which I have the utmost respect. Dunko was one incredibly lucky fellow to have had such an incredible pair of parents!
