Sheltie size question!

I think maybe time for a new vet? Seems he is not up on his breeds. This dog looks Sheltie to me - the narrower skull, for example. (though I suppose its possible there is something else mixed in).

This is the same vet who looked at my Irish Setter as a puppy and said he was going to be freakishly gigantic because he had big paws and big joints ... The vet guessed he'd be 107lbs at full growth ... I wanted to say 'newsflash Doc, most setter puppies are leggy, with big paws and big joints ... he'll be no bigger than 80lbs," but, alas, I didn't say anything back to the vet. P.S. -- my setter is now a full-grown 2-year-old who weighs .... 80 pounds!! Needless to say, we try to see one of the OTHER vets when we take our dogs into the clinic!!

he must be the cat vet at the clinic :yes::lol:

Welcome to the forum! He is really cute. One of my pups stopped growing at about 8 months and he is now about 17 inches and my other at about 8 months and he is about 17 1/2 inches, which surprised the breeder. She expected both of them to be smaller. Lots of size ranges on this forum. Enjoy your new addition!

Update: Nick

Well, we've had Nick for a little over two weeks now. He's on his last treatment for worms, but he's already perked up and is starting to put on some weight/grow. He sure is a little bundle of energy!! A stubborn, little bundle of energy, but is a very sweet guy. He's getting along great with all his older "brothers." He and our Golden wrestle constantly, he chases our Setter non-stop around the back yard, and he is still "bonding" with our Border Collie who doesn't always appreciate his puppy antics.

It's so different to have a puppy who grows so much more slowly than the large breed dogs we're used to having. Although he's leggier now, he's still quite small. When do Sheltie's usually have a growth spurt/stop growing?

He's still small enough to fit through our wrought-iron fence so we purchased a "puppy bumper," which you'll see in the pictures. It works great to keep him safely inside the fence, but is obviously something we don't leave on him much (only when he's playing outside). As you can see from the pictures, he looks quite goofy in it!!

Enjoy the pictures! I've been comparing him to other Sheltie pictures of the same age and he just seems so petite! I know the worms/malnutrition when he was a stray play into it, but does he still look Sheltie to all of you? Thanks for all your support and answers!!

He's got those coyote legs so he is definately on his growth spurt. Mine had a final growth at around 12 months but were essentially their adult height by 9mths.

This is my little girl at 6mths - she is only 13", you can see the difference in the length of her legs compared to your boy. http://www.sheltieforums.com/album.php?albumid=133&pictureid=1525

In those photos he definately looks sheltie and not BC. He has got that sweet sheltie look and long nose.

That is exactly what my English Setters weighed, and no setters aren't for everyone. They were my loyal, sweet pals and my boys hunting dogs.

Your puppy's face is precious, if he is mixed or whatever he sure is a cutie.
Sounds like he landed in the right lap for his forever home. Lucky little Nick.

I call Border Collie. Sorry, that is not a Sheltie head. It is much too broad and short, and the ears are all BC.

He is wicked cute though. Nothing prettier than a classically marked BC.

Good looking fellow and he is probably not 100% if he was a stray. So there is no telling other than he is an unofficial Sheltie since he is here

Sca almost quit getting taller at the coyote phase and started to fill out so my guess is not a ton taller. Tell the BC puppies are fun and quit being a grump :rolleyes2:
