Sheltie size question!

Hmmm, to my eye he is not pure Sheltie - it's his head. But he is absolutely top-notch cute! Has a real intelligent look in his eyes. I'm very drawn to his pictures - I think you have a great dog on your hands!

Welcome to the forum.

Keep us updated - lots of pictures of this handsome young man!

I call Border Collie. Sorry, that is not a Sheltie head. It is much too broad and short, and the ears are all BC.

He is wicked cute though. Nothing prettier than a classically marked BC.

Would a Border Collie only be 11 pounds at 5 months? I would take a bet they would be a lot heavier than that.

The head is a bit broad for pure sheltie, but the size fits for Sheltie. Must be a Sheltie mixed with something else.

He is very cute, I agree.

That was my thought too. At least part BC. He is small, but his head is broad and his muzzle is shorter and broader than a sheltie's.

Why not? He hasn't been eating good, has (or had) worms, he doesn't have a ton of bone. He probably should be 16 or 17 pounds right now, and will bulk up as he gets older, especially with good nutrition. Out here, we have a lot of small BCs that run in the 16 inch class.

I have to say I thought BC also.

I had a female border collie that was 15 pounds at 6 months she ended up being 30 pounds full grown and 16 inches at the withers, my male sheltie Dusty is bigger than that.

He is cute though :biggrin2:

They have those test kits. Somebody on here recently bought one for their sheltie. Sorry - I forgot who it was! They tell you what breed your dog really is. That's probably the only way to be 100% sure. If I remember right, they also said they got a discount on the test kit recently.

I'm sure somebody else will remember who it was. I just woke up and am lucky I remember anything.

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. He's definitely a different type of pup than we've ever had! SUPER quirky!! We thought about getting one of those breed-test things, but decided as long as we have an idea what he might be (border collie/sheltie/something else), we can at least know a bit about the characteristics/health/etc. of the breeds we THINK he could be so we can be as education as we can. Unlike most of our other pups, it's kind of exciting to have everyone in our family and close friend circle guess how big he'll end up being. He's already put on close to an inch and a half. He's now a little over 14 inches.

I've loved reading all the posts on this forum. He does so many of the things that everyone is talking about, so maybe he's part Sheltie and part something else little. He's a great pup with a lot of spunk. He does the funniest things and is so cat-like! We have these long bucket-type things on the sides of our pool cover to add some extra weight to prevent blowing if it gets windy, and he sticks his hole face in there to feel what's in the bottom of it, and then will take his paw and use it like a cat to grab the leafs from the bottom of it and pull them out.

Anyway, I appreciate the warm welcome despite none of us being 100% sure he is 100% Sheltie :)

Thanks again and give all your beautiful Shelties a pat from me!!

Maybe a BC and Sheltie mix? I don't think he's pure for sure

I find his muzzle BC like, but his skull too narrow, and more reminding me of a Sheltie (i.e. if he was BC only, I find his wedge too narrow)

He's soooo cute! I agree, however, he doesn't look full sheltie. I would certainly guess he's mixed, but mixed with what is hard to tell, esp at this age. I have sheltie mixes too and they are just now starting to resemble a 'breed' and even then not very much. I'm going to order the DNA test reaaaalllly soon as I've gotta find out! Enjoy him! He's soooo cute
