Sheltie smells like pee! How to keep her clean?

Ok, since we are on this subject, does anyone have any problems with their Sheltie secreting that awful smell from the anal glands? Gez, Zoe does this when she gets really upset like leaving her in the car alone...... Last week she did it and she wasn't happy with me. Out to the hose for a butt washing! Wipes don't help that and I was too lazy to give her a whole bath! Just wondered if anyone else's dogs did this.

I've not had that problem with a dog but I had a cat who used to get clogged anal glands and she used to stink!

I've heard of dogs having the same problem, perhaps its something you should mention to your vet, I don't think its uncommon to have vets (and possibly groomers?) express their anal glands.

When I was in high school I did a co-op at a vets office. Boy did the exam rooms stink after an anal express! The smell was unbelievable, I swear that it could make a person pass out! It was my job to clean the rooms afterward, boy did I hate cleaning up after one of those exams!
 
I've never had an issue with either of the boy's anal glands. I imagine they are kept clean and healthy by the raw diet I feed. A good firm bone-poo every couple of days will clean them out nicely. And though I have heard of dogs expressing their glands when they get upset, I've never encountered it myself. My guys rarely get upset, pretty tolerant and accepting of everything. :lol:

Well, Zoe is on special K/D food because at the young age of 6 1/2, she has kidney issues. I'm sure that doesn't help, but she had this problem with the previous owners too. I have mentioned it to the vet and they just acted like it isn't a real problem - they should have to smell it!
 
no I never experienced that before.. only thing I ever dealt with was when my doggie got upset at my dad she went upstairs to his room and went pee on his side of the bed just to get back at him for yelling at her. Lucky it wasn't a recurring thing.. it was a one time event but I however never laughed so hard in my entire life.
 
not an issue that I've ever had to deal with. My male mix sometimes needs to have his expressed- we let the groomer or the vet take care of that when he needs it. :wink2:
 
on the peeing part, when Callie comes in after a potty trip, I've trimmed away wet hair so that she has a better potty path. I trim her butt area practically every time I brush her to avoid the dreaded cling-ons. :wink2:
 
The fur in Sadie's 'pee area' is fairly sparse and I've never noticed a smell. Should I leave it be or should I trim the fur away anyway?

Its never been an issue so it never occured to me to trim her there.

Actually, I just remembered, she was a bit smelly and even sticky there as a young puppy, at a check up the vet called it vagenitis I think, she said it was common in puppies and often goes away on its own. She said if it didn't seem to bother her to leave it alone but if it didn't go away in a month or so that something needed to be done about it. I kept and eye on it and it went away a short while later. The smell didn't bother us too much because she got dirty alot when she was young and required a few baths close together and I always made sure to clean that area.
 
Baby wipes! I never thought of that! I wish I had with my older pup....he was having alot of digestive issues (nasty) and I would have to clip the mess away from his bum every couple of days (very nasty!)

So far not an issue with Bacca, but his fur is still coming in!

As far any smell....I don't know what it is about Bacca but so far he is the sweetest smelling dog I've smelt in a long time. Maybe all puppies smell that way...I don't remember. But David, who is very finicky about anything seeming remotely dirty loves to pick up Bacca and inhale (just like you do with a human baby....you know that delicious smell they have!):smile2:
 
I read all the posts here and am wondering what to do with Chinook. He gets pee ALL over his underside - I mean everywhere! all the way to the posterior of his front legs! I cannot shave his entire underside - he'd look ridiculous. I never had this problem with my last male sheltie. Chinook, seems to pee forwards and he comes in dripping (yuk!) I can't bathe him daily. I have no problems with his bum, just his pee! Any advice? Should I shave him? or should I just resign to washing his underneath daily?
