Sheltie Survey

I personally don't think there is a bad color on a sheltie.
I have owned everything but a CHW and a sable merle. I likely will not own one as I am interesting in conformation, nothing wrong with them.

But my preference in order color is
Bi blue
Blue merle
Bi black
Tri
Sable
Sable Merle
CHW

Personally bi blue is so far out in front, I would prefer only have them. But color is secondary to the whole dog. My last 2 attempts to get a biblue have resulted in a blue merle and a bi black.

I wish I had pics, the computer that had all her pics, got a nasty virus/trojan deal that killed it and all the photos I stored on there. We tried everything to retrieve stuff, but files were lost, corrupted and trashed. Even my whiz geeky friends couldn't undo the damage, sigh.

They are all so beautiful, I would have a hard time saying which one I like the best. Cody was a sable, and when I would walk him, I cannot count the times that people in cars would slow down or stop to tell me how handsome he was. Zulu is a tri, and now that he is starting to fill out, he gets his share of complements, but he has a way to go catch up with Cody.
 
I have a hard time ranking colors because to me it's less about color and it's more about look. I think sables have a more consistent look (an odd marking is unusual in a sable, whereas it's common in a merle and I think that can totally change the soft/correct sheltie look).

But if I HAD to:

  • Sable (prefer lighter)
  • Bi-blue
  • Blue merle
  • Bi-black
  • Tri
  • CHW
  • Sable Merle
 
Our first sheltie, Skye, was the most amazing mahogany (shaded) sable. Then Asta came along, very light and our "blonde" girl. Ally has a bit more of the red tone to her coat. I love the sables because you can see their eyes so well.

Brooke is an absolutely stunning bi-black and she looks so elegant, but her eyes are almost black too, so unless the light is just right it's harder to read her expression. Faith's eyes are somewhat lighter and her brown "eyebrows" help with her expression. Both Brooke and Faith have glossy, shiny, shimmering black coats, though which is gorgeous. I like blue merles but often the black markings on their face can be large and distracting to me. I do love Dr. Shelli's Ember, she is a wonderful soft gray blue and you can really see her eyes.
