Sheltie Survey

My preference:

Red Sables. Bacca was one of those
Red sabled merles.....Callan sees to be one of these. Only merle gene left is his blue eyes and a little bit of grey on his ears.

I just love the red colour, so unique

Indy, of course, is a tri.....I'm less in love with the look, though of course I love my boy, Indy/

This is a quandary. Shortly after joining this forum, I was describing my Lily, I thought that She was a tri color, based on Her predominant visible colors. When I got to Her blue eye in the side of Her head that was white.
I was quickly reminded that blue eyes only show up in a blue merle sheltie, and to look closer and I would find proof of the blue merle gene. That I did. One thing is this for me. i may have a preference for a particular color sheltie, but the color does not make them any more dedicated nor sweeter, of gentler. I may have a desire for a certain color but I will take what ever sheltie that comes my way and let them grow into the sweerhearts that they are, no matter what. I would see really pretty shelties some time and Lily did not look like them, BUT, Her dedication, Her sweetness, Her gentleness, more than made up for what She looked like. Most people thought She was a Border Collie until I told them that She was a sheltie. It was Her personality that endeared me to Her. Patience, dedication, gentleness and being just genuinely sweet, were all traits that were not color oriented. All colors have their beautiful attributes. Every one can say that their own particular pup is sweet, and other traits so here we go, just give me a little critter to call my own and we will see how they turn out. Will they match up to Lily, probably not. But they will bring other things to the table.

Sable all types are my favorite.... And also all four generations in my family have owned. I have always wanted to try a tri or bi black. It is hard to break tradition and alot of sable memories. I didnt even know shelties came in other colors until i was 13 and read sheltie talk! Blue merles i prefer on a collie but are growing on me... Especially more muted ones. Reality is i don't dislike any color. I am open to any coloring in my next sheltie. I am actually hoping for a non-sable to help with giving the new dog a fresh start after such a close bond with My toby

Color is completely secondary to the temperament of the dog, in my opinion, but my color preference is:

Sable
Sable Merle (I love my brown dogs.)
Bi-Black (I find them absolutely striking to look at)
Bi-Blue*
Blue Merle*
Tri-Color

* In both cases with the Blue Merle and Bi-Blue I'm super picky about the merling. I prefer them without big black patches like Enzo and Ember.

My 1st was sable, looked like a lil Lassie. When she passed the family said next one can't look like her, too many memories...so 2nd was a shaded sable with predominately dark/black shading. When she passed, I decided can't have a reminder of her. When the breeder contacted me, I think this one is for you, she is dark chocolate and whelped on valentine's day. She was, a sweet tricolored angel-to me she looks like a BC. I wanted a playmate for her, we were waiting for a girl, breeder called and said we have fair sables this time, come see. So all my girls have been different colors, like you, I wanted them to remain individuals. Personalities are unique, but I just think it helps if they have a fresh start, and don't resemble or have to live up to former experiences/expectations. Savannah looks like a sheltie, but doesn't ACT like a sheltie, and I tell her she is failing her genetic pool-but I keep hoping maturity brings this to pass. And the breeder laughs and says some of theirs had precarious starts, but came around. One can only hope:fl
