Should I be worried?

Hey! Kipper's mom here.
Kipper is 1yr 5mo. and is HUGE. He grew to be a 19" at the shoulder, 40# sheltie. Good grief, what a haystack. They grow 'em big in Nebraska
I have two things going on with him right now and I don't know if I should be worried or not.
One: He gets this line of white scale on his black nose right at the hairline and all the way across. It wipes off, but then is back in a few hours. We don't have hard water... what could that be?

Two: Sometimes, in the early morning when he's lounging around and sleepy, he starts jerking his lower half of his body for about ten seconds(not like, um, humping) while laying down on his side, and his left paw curls under like he's making a fist, and his snout tips way down like he's curling his neck under. TELL me this isn't the Sheltie siezure thing. I had a male sheltie with siezures, but it didn't look like that when he was having them. Any clue??

We're in the middle of a move across country so things are crazy here. I'll get him checked, but in the meantime I wanted to see what all of you thought about it. :confused2:

I wish I had some advice for you, but I'm afraid I don't. But I know there are many great people on here to give you some information. I hope everything is ok with your pup!

Bacca sometimes gets that white scale that you talk about. I don't know what causes it, but it does not seem to cause him any discomfort.

As for the second issue, I think a vet advice is required here.

Do you have pesticides in the lawn by any chance? Eating grass with any form of pesticide/herbicide might cause convulsions.

You also say that this seems to be in the mornings only? Can you confirm that? Don't know where he sleeps, but could it be that he's body is numb from being in one position too long?

Just thnking out loud

Noah used to get the scaly thing too but only at certain times of the year. It would depend on the water I gave him and how it was being treated. I finally switched him to filtered water and he didn't have trouble with the scales.

For the other, I agree - check with a vet. I know my dogs sometimes twitch, etc, when they are sleeping, like they are dreaming.

Pierre (Papillon, though, not Sheltie) will kick out his legs in seizure-like fashion at night or when snuggled up to us to get attention and belly rubs. Does he stop if you pet him? It sounds behavioral to me, but like everyone has said - a vet would be a good consult. Even a call might clear it up.

I'm no vet, but it sounds like what I call air-humping. Bentley does it at night when he is very tired. He will be laying on his side and all of a sudden he's going to town. But he looks as if he has no idea what's going on, and his feet will curl up. We can snap him out of it by petting him or making him get up.

The scale thing - Deska gets that too sometimes, I never worry about it - just figure its like when we drool in our sleep and get that crusty stuff at the side of our mouths.

Ah, yes and I agree with Ashley - definately sounds like the early morning air humping. Mr D does this every morning. Sometimes he lies down and tries to stop it himself, but it is just one of those male things that happens automatically.

I think the white crust is just dried up saliva from them licking their nose. My dogs get that too, it doesn't irritate them and I just wipe it off. As for the second one, I'm not sure, but I really hope it's nothing serious ;(.

Thank you!

Thanks for the advice!
I had to LOL at "air humping"... like the air guitar or something. I'll keep an eye on it and will have him checked if it continues or worsens.
Also, thanks for the advice on the nose thing. Makes sense!
My silly Baby Huey. He's a handful!

Hugs to all
