Should shelties eat fruit

Unless you're giving them massive amounts, I'd be more concerned for their teeth than anything else.
 
I had a look into my favourite BARF book Natural Dog Food by Susanne Reinerth. She also doesn't recommend the grapes because there were some cases as dogs got poisened and in larger amount grapes could cause kidney failure.

My friend's Borzoi loves lemons and all other citrus fruits. These can be fed to dogs but only in small amount. Reinerth says citrus fruits are good for the immune system and digestion.

Perry doesn't like fruit. When I give him some into his bowl (toghether with meat etc.) he gives me the look: Why did you do that? :lol:
 
I bought a fresh pineapple for a recipe recently. While I was cutting it up, Forrest came into the kitchen & started drooling. I forgot I've fed him pineapple before & both our Shelties love it. They also like apples. Don't get me started on green beans from the garden (this is a fruit thread Jo). OK, they steal as many as they can right off the plants :gaah. Lucky for me we don't have any apple trees, I'm sure Forrest would be climbing trees to get them too.

HA HA, mine only takes her green beans after we boil them. If we try to give her a raw one and she will usually spit it out by the oven like we have done something cruel to her and she is demanding it is done right.
 
I give my dog a little piece of a banana every once in a while. She has also tasted a little piece of an apple and a pear. Just make sure you don't feed the skin or the seeds.

Grapes and raisins are poisonous. If you give one every blue moon, you won't notice an immediate issue, but over time those toxins can build up and may cause serious organ damage.
 
George eats bananas, pineapple, apples, peaches, and asparagus. Went nuts for the sugar snap peas the other day. He doesn't get a lot of any of it, but he really does enjoy all of this.
 
Cadbury pays a visit to my grandad every day for his daily half apple. He also loves bananas and watermelon. Merlin is not so sure and they do have to compete with the guinea pigs.
 
Humans have a condition called Hereditary Fructose Intolerance, in which the enzyme responsible for fructose metabolism is missing. The symptoms are just about the same as those listed for dogs eating grapes. It would make sense that dogs would be lacking such an enzyme (or at least some dogs, or some dogs lacking to some extent). Maybe it's not wise to give dogs any fruit at all?
 
Two of my shelties will sit at my feet and wait for whatever as soon as they see me get the cutting board out or hear chopping. They love romaine lettuce, tomatoes, apples, watermelon, pears, bananas, green peppers, peas, broccoli, carrots, green beans, and just about anything else they are allowed to have :lol: No onions, grapes, potatoes, etc.
