Simba update

A few months ago I posted a thread about how Simba wasn't really enjoying obedience and seemed to be shying away from it. I didn't know what to do to make it fun for him. We started working one to one with a brilliant trainer and she told me what I needed to do to make sure he was enjoying himself. He needs constant over the top praise, that was the key!

Today we competed in our first trial since the last disaster where he was afraid in the ring and just wasn't happy. We placed 6th in a class of 24 and got our first rosette :D It was a special introductory class and so dogs from higher classes could enter. He was so happy and excited to be in the ring. His heal work was perfect and his recall was solid!

I am so so proud :smile2:

Wonderful! Cubby too wants TONS of happy praise in class. I have one more obedience class with him when our trainer does it again.

Outstanding!!!
That is a great showing!

I guess they are just like people...
Some need more praise than others to motivate them.

Thank you :)

We always say in the class quiet praise in between exercises and tonnes of praise when its all done so that the dog isn't getting over excited in between exercises but Simba needs tonnes of exaggerated praise throughout.

It was a brilliant class to enter for his first time back in the ring :) Onwards and upwards :biggrin2:

Brilliant!! Many congratulations :biggrin2: Motivation, it's the key to everything :wink2:

One reason why I never wanted to work in A. I think withholding any verbal or physical reinforcement is almost punishment for some dogs, who like people have different limits on how much they can do without getting any feedback at all. As a 'softer' breed, shelties often struggle when they go to A and upwards. The Introductory Class is wonderful because it really encourages motivation. :biggrin2:

Do you have Special Pre-Beginners classes too? (but they might have stopped doing those, I'm a bit out of touch :o)
