Socializing A Sheltie With A Cat

I haven't been there in a while but my mother reports that Milo is doing better around the cat. He's still leashed to a chair but he's no longer trying to lunge at her and doesn't seem as excited by her.

I've encouraged my Mother to give Milo lots of praise when he's good, which she says she does, but it still seems to really excite him, which has the potential of bringing about undesirable behaviors. (If any other animals are around while he's getting attention he feels the need to lunge at them. Its another thing my Dad encouraged so Milo is still learning that this type of behavior is no longer acceptable).

I've told my Mother to start letting him off leash when the cat is around but I'm not sure if she will do it or not. She feels safer having him on leash, even though it won't allow him to fully get past his problems.

The kitty is wary of Milo but comfortable enough to wander into the room with him. She'll also sleep and play now when he's in the room and she also enjoys drinking out of his water bowl

Since a trip to the vets we've determined that as we suspected, Magic is much younger than we were told (only approx. 10 months, not 2 years) and that her bad gas (stinkiest kitty I've EVER smelled!) and lack of energy are due to round worms. She also had ear mites. Since getting her medicine she's now acting like the kitten she is. We're hoping that now that she's feeling better that she won't be so frightened of the dog, will stand up to him if need be and maybe even take interest in him when he learns how to behave properly around the kitty.

I hope things continue to go well, and Magic recovers from her roundworms soon (not fun for anyone!) I love cats and dogs...and seeing them get along is the most anernable thing ever.

Glad to hear things are on the right track :wink2:

How does your mum praise Milo? You say he gets really excited when praised? If her voice is high when she praises, or she talks excitedly that will trigger him off again. She needs to speak calmly and softly, and gently stroke behind the ears and down the neck in long slow strokes to calm him.

Also the point she praises is important. He has to be calm for a few seconds at least before being praised, else he might be confused and still associate being excited with the praise.

And as soon as he starts to tense again as though he's building up to lunging, she needs to stop the praise.

But sounds like they have made improvements. And don't talk to me about dads' training techniques - mine seems to unravel all my good work in seconds! :rolleyes2:

Milo Is Doing Very Well With The Cat

Just an update on Milo and the new cat Magic.

Milo is doing very well. After being leashed to the leg of a chair for two weeks Milo finally realized that he wasn't supposed to be lunging at the cat whenever she entered the room. I think it really helped that my Mother started praising him big time for his good behavior. Way to go Mom!

Milo hasn't been tied up for 1-2 weeks and he's no longer scaring the daylights out of Magic. She's gotten used to his crazy barking when someone comes to the door and no longer runs. She stands her ground now when he's around and doesn't run in terror when he approaches her. As a matter of fact, Milo is acting afraid of her now! When they get to close together she hisses at him, he gulps and walks the other way

Magic is very friendly and playful and is finally acting like the kitten is. Given her wonderful disposition, we still have hopes that one day they'll be friends and enjoy playing together, like Milo did with our old cat.

Glad things are settling into a happy household! Funny that he would have problems with Magic, when he was already used to a cat!

Our neighbor's cat was a big nuisance to us, he was always tormenting our old cats, trying to get in our house (the previous owners used to feed him when he was a stray), and marking his territory all around our house and in the car port. To try to keep him away my Dad encouraged Milo to chase him and bark like crazy.

Milo has always loved cats he used to play with my old cat, but because of my Dad training that bad habit into him, Milo had to be retaught how to interact with a kitty in an appropriate way. We never would have gotten another cat had we thought there was any real aggression in him. He was just acting like a social idiot

Glad to hear everything is on track, the best thing out is that Magic stands her ground as most dogs are actually quite scared of cats when they hiss and scratch.

Well done to your mum, as she has obviously put in a lot of work and time.
