Sock Obsession

I got my sheltie (Lexi) when she was about 12 weeks old. When I brought her home she had NO drive to play for about a month. After that, I guess she decided I was ok lol, and began to play with me. Also around this time she developed a passion for socks haha. At first it was cute, but after a few weeks, I began scolding her for getting them out of the laundry basket. Now at 13 months old she continues to hunt down socks, but now she insists on stuffing them in couch cushions/behind her bed even though I scold her every time I catch her... Anyone else experienced this behavior? She has plenty of other toys, and does play with them too, but they don't compare to her love for socks.. Any suggestions on how to break the sock habit?

Sure -- give her a bra!!! Or underpants!!! Seriously, if it smells like you and is portable and chewable, it's fair game. So, as my family learned, keep socks and tempting unmentionables off the floor. "And lead us not into temptation..."

Very true!! recently after the lights where out for the light i heard her head off the bed towards the closet. She then proceeded to try to push her was through the closet door to get to the laundry basket.. the face she made when i flipped on the light was PRICELESS.. kind of like a "hey look at the time.. better get back in bed" look. i can't tell you how many times I've been vacuuming and found 5 or 6 socks in between the couch cushions.. all I can do is laugh at her silly behavior

Sock and other obsessions

Oh, this is just hilarious!!! :biggrin2: :biggrin2:

Both my dogs have their individual 'hobbies' or 'obsessions': Every day Jessie collects her toys and hides them underneath her kennel and Josh tries to pick up every smooth round stone that he can get his hands... uh ... mouth on. Apparently his Dad does the same.... his owner found a whole stone collection in his kennel once. They both exhibited these behaviours from earliest puppyhood so I wonder if it's been passed down from the parents somehow?

They also have a weird fascination with any kind of plastic bags. At first I thought it was the smell of the trash that attracted them but they are going after new ones as well. I have to be real careful :eek2: not to let them lie around anywhere in the house. When they get hold of one they just sit there and meticulously tear it to pieces (they don't swallow the stuff; phew!!!). How strange is that....!!

Wow is your sheltie related to my old sheltie.. haha... My sheltie (chasity) had an obsession with stealing only 1 sock from the pair of my husbands socks. She would go in his shoe where his socks were and steal one and hide it. I think we are still finding socks in my parents house. She did this b/c she knew my husband wouldn't leave the house unless he had his socks and shoes on. Hubby got annoyed and said forget it.. I am leaving anyways. So she tried peeing in his shoe so he wouldn't leave. But no matter what, she loved his socks.

I'm not so sure the socks even need to smell like you, yesterday I brought some socks home from Target, still packaged, still in the sack and before I knew it CeCe was carrying around the 3-pack of socks in her mouth. It was like she was saying "Gee, thanks for getting me these new toys!"

We don't have a sock problem at our house or anything else for that matter so I wouldn't even know where to begin on that. But I am cracking up over here at all of your comments! Keep the laughs coming b/c it's Friday and I need something to keep me busy today!

You are just so funny. Chris you made my day!! My Kia is also a sock thief. When my Grand-Kids come over they always take their shoes and socks off. Why I don't know they just do. Kia immediately goes for them it's like yeah the kids are here and new toys have arrived. Off she goes with shoes and socks. I now have a bag that hangs on the door knob for them to deposit their items into.

Sadie as well as my parent's sheltie both when through phases in their adolescence when nothing gave them more joy than stealing articles of clothing. Sadie prefered whipping socks around in her mouth, Milo, my parent's sheltie was much more embarassing, he LOVED underwear, usually mine. On more than one occasion when we had company over Milo would come running into the living room with a pair of my underwear in his mouth, whipping around like a flag. Everyone but me was laughing, I was so embarrassed!

I have a laundry helper...

My Trevor actually "helps" me put away my hubby's socks. :biggrin2:

I pair them & then tuck them into a ball. Perfect size for a Sheltie mouth. Once I bring the laundry basket upstairs the fun begins. I dump all the sock balls onto the floor & he picks up one at a time & brings them over to the open sock drawer. (It is the conveniently located & perfect height bottom drawer of hubby's dresser.)

He is so proud of himself for helping. But sometimes just to make the fun last, as soon as he drops it into the drawer, he pulls it back out again. I have to ask him to bring it back, where he then walks over & puts it back in. That dog is just too funny.
