Ooh, no fun! I have the same problem and stand defeated - you might have to give up on that one as the bitey game is just too much fun. Just regularly sprinkle talc. I find just a normal bristle brush is good for brushing out those saliva laden matts.
I went to a groomer who cut the hair at the back (rather than work out the matts) and the fur grew back even more knotted! I guess if you kept it short all the time it might work, but I find it harder to groom when it was short so it turned into a big, congealed matt instead of several matts. Better to just splice through the matts edgeways to work them out.
I'm with Caro here! I get a kick out watching them play. A little baby powder and its fine. But maybe I'm lucky. The boys' ears don't really mat much at all. Bacca almost never, and Indy - only if I've been negligent.
And as she says if they are really tough, then you splice through them and comb out.
But as someone else said....I think Chris???....I find even Indy's ears are not matting as much as they used to. Maybe he's growing out of his puppy coat - finally!
