Sympathy Lyme

Great! Just Great! I have had Lyme Disease and was hoping that I never experienced that again!

MMM says, GREAT too! He didn't like his sick day either and doesn't want a repeat of it.

I hope Barkley is feeling better soon. Interesting that he never tested positive of Lyme. The test is pretty sensitive. Did he get tested for Anaplamosis or Ehrlichia? They are 2 other tick borne diseases and they can have very similar syptoms. They also respond to Doxy treatment.

I also heard that once you get lyme, you always have it. It's just dormant until the immune system is weak and then it pops up again.

I don't know if the Lyme test he had was run for those diseases, but I will ask when I talk to my vet this week, thanks, Dr. Shelli. My horse just had her second bout of ehrlicia last week and was very sick.

Barkley is responding to the Doxycyclene as he usually does and is almost his old self this morning. Thank heaven for this medication.

Poor Barkley.

It must be summer in Connecticut. For the third straight June, Barkley has Lyme disease. He must have read how pampered his nephew McKinley was after his diagnosis and picked this week to get his own case.

The interesting thing about Barkley is that he's never tested positive, but his symptoms are pretty classic and he responds almost immediately to Doxycyclene, the Lyme antibiotic. The year before last, he had it twice in one summer! What threw us off this time is that he was lame on a different leg than his usual Lyme leg. But I knew this morning the poor little guy was so stiff looking and just not himself what was was going on. He didn't have McKinley's high temp but he was high normal, which is also his pattern, along with the gimpiness, lethargy and stiffness.

So just be aware if your dog has had Lyme that they do seem to get repeat cases, and may not always present all the symptoms. I'm hoping Barkley improves after a dose or two of the Doxy as he usually does. At the moment, he's laying at my feet wearing his pathetic look.... :(

Ann I'm sorry that Barkley is showing signs of Lyme again !! Poor Baby. Know am I understanding this correctly, they will keep showing signs of Lyme once they have contracted it!! Even though they don't get bit again by those good for nothing ticks?? Wow that stinks.

I'm sorry to hear your sheltie's not feeling that well. I'm origionally from Norwich CT just a stones throw from Old Lyme where the disease was first diagnosed, the disease was in "full awareness mode" when I was in high school/college.

While it is possible that the disease has "flared" up again, that seems improbable if it was caught early. From my understanding Lyme treatment gets really complicated if there was a simultaneous infection with other tick-borne diseases.

Still there have been a few people who claim that the treatment hasn't helped at all, from the literature I've read it seems as though these people may have not been diagnosed until stage 2 or 3 lyme.

Both my parents have had Lyme at this point, I believe I've luckly avoided it although I lived in a very wooded area as a child and had numerous pets. The only tick incident I can recall was a rather frightening one involving a full grown adult tick on the back of my head, and my parents freakint out.

I hope your sheltie's simply suffering from a re-infection and not a flare up from an old tick bite. As that would be more worrysome.

I suggest implementing a scortched earth policy with regards to ticks, front line, herbal sprays, yard sprays and bedding sprays, sprinkling some food grade diateomacious earth on your carpet wouldn't hurt either. After seeing a nymph on my arm the other day, and yanking one off Vash last week I decided to pretty much turn my home into a tick-unfriendly home. There are about 7 layers of tick prevention. It's too bad I couldn't just nuke them...

It being "that time of year", it would be helpful if someone could refresh everyone on the symptoms of lyme, the side effects and what happens if left untreated.

I'm finding myself increasingly concerned about lyme, and what happens if I miss it! Lyme was never an issue in my region until a few years ago, now it has spread to my part of the world. And we have deer all over the island, though I've yet to see one this spring.

Thx in advance!
