Taillight and undercarriage

Does anyone know of any diagram or example of how to groom a Sheltie's business end??? I have heard of something called a "poop-shute" but do not know what it looks like... Also, are you supposed to shave their undercarriage (around their privates) or only in specific areas? Jasper is 8 months old now and needs some grooming... I don't know if I should take him in to have this done professionally or if some simple trimming is all it takes... Thanks...

Here we go~

I just love these questions of "poop shute" I'm sure someone here will refer to a past post about this very subject.

There's the link to the poop chute madness. I'm not exactly looking forwarding to learning all that grooming stuff just yet. But I am putting away a little money for a nice set of scissors, thinning shears, furminator, pin brush, etc... and I might have to get one of those nifty bags to store it all in like Barb and Smudge and a few others have.

For Pierre, all I've ever had to use was a slicker and a pair of scissors (for his feet only).

I purchased the CD from Silver Trails Shelties....still waiting on it, but in the meantime, they sent me a link to their online seminar. There's some pretty good video on the poop chute (although, they don't extend it so far down).

It's really not very difficult though. If you are uncomfortable using scissors, by a Lady's bikini trimmer. I've used it on the boys. It's very gentle and small so you can control your movements.

I suppose I could take a picture of the boy's bums, but I can only imagine their embarrassment! They even get funny when I check under their tail (Indy likes to clamp his down or tries to sit!!!):o

I to would be interested in seeing a photo of the clip. No please don't embarrass the boys Barb! Just to funny~

Narmowen drew this diagram: l l

Chris named it the Poop Chute.

That is a bit of the bio on cutting a butt.

It is "l l" and someone suggested an inch and half wide which works well. Its just a verticle cut from under the tail, an inch and a half wide, all the way down.

I have a silky and he never has anything hanging on him, the coarse hair my girl has, the little tootsie rolls will hang if I get behind on her trimming.

The worst part about her she isn't constipated but she walks and poops instead of the squat. That is another reason she has it hanging.

Is it only a cd and not a dvd? If it's a dvd then let me know if it was any good or not. I plan on doing a lot of Smudge's trimming myself. I've heard too many horror stories of groomers shaving shelties. :uhoh: Of course, I'm going to take him to the groomer and let the groomer do the annoying parts. Like the poop chute and the hair around the paw pads.

Yes, the poop-chute has been a lifesaver at our house! I trim with rounded tip scissors from the anus to the "crotch." I clip it to about a quarter inch, making sure I don't go beyond what the tail will cover. It really helps keep everybody tidy! :wink2:

I'm pretty sure its a CD, but you should be able to watch it on your computer, yes? But I'll let you know if its worth it, once I receive it.

For the poop chute, it helps to have an extra pair of hands to keep the pup standing and to hold up the tail. Indy clamps his tail down whenever I go near there, so there is normally a wrestling match until I get him settled into position.

The hair around the paws is easy too. On the paw pads, you simply push the hair down between the toes, then trim with a round nail scissor. For the top of the feet, I use the same trimmer as for the butt but with an extremely light touch.

I do most of the rest myself. I leave the bathing and drying to the groomer - and to assist with the nails. (I'm a little chicken and don't always cut/dremmel close enough to the quick) She also gets the spots that I've missed because I'm still learning and still don't have all the equipment yet.

Smudge is still very young. You should get him used to be mauled (without the torture tools). When cuddling, fondle his ears, hold his paws, press gently on his nails, etc.
