Tapping my heels

Hi there,

I have recently noticed my 8 month old Sheltie has been doing something different. It doesn't bother me or anything but just wanted to know why she does it. "Lady" walks behind me and she taps my heel with her paw when I'm walking. Usually just once or twice gently. I'm 7 months pregnant and I guess I'm walking slower and thought maybe she is telling me to walk faster? Any ideas?

LOL Sounds like you are being told to "pick up the pace"....I suspect this is her way of herding you along. As long as she doesn't start to nip at your heels it shouldn't be a problem...if she does shows signs of nipping I would curb that immediately. Our little ones can be so funny at times. :smile2:

Missy used to follow me around and bump my calf with her nose. Never nipping, but usually with a toy in her mouth. She was an extremely playful and high-energy puppy, so I think she was just trying to get me to stop walking away from her and play! She's still playful and high-energy, but the calf bumping has stopped. But she will jump on the couch with a toy and try to give it to me to play. If I'm busy doing something, after a while I look down and I'm surrounded by toys :rolleyes2:.

She might be trying to get you to speed up, but she also might be trying to get your attention. What does she do if you stop and look at her?

Shelby does this to get our attention. When we get home she will walk behind us tapping our legs. Like she is saying "hey get down here and say hello to me".

The sheltie will do this to us occasionally, but the shepherd x McNab (GSD x border collie essentially) is the big one for this. Most noticeable is when we have to run for the phone. No nipping, just touching usually the back of the calf.

Totally normal. VERY annoying!

Layla and Beckon see a walk down the driveway as the signal to seize Mamma's pantleg or nip her calf. Whoo hoo, great fun. :rolleyes2:

I may be the only one, but I find the heel tapping really cute... could be a bit of a trip hazard though.
