Tattoos on dogs

I don't have any problem with people getting tattoo's...I'll even call well done, well thought out tattoo's art. I've thought about getting one myself, before deciding it wasn't me.

But I firmly believe this is animal abuse.

Even if the dogs out while they're doing it, tattoo's still hurt once they're done. They bleed, the skin is raw and scraped up, it scabs, and once it's healing it itches. Add that into the fact that there is always a risk when you give something anesthesia. If you saw some kids poking needles into a dog that was tied up you'd call it abuse, just because this is a pattern doesn't make it different.

My sister likened it to giving her toddlers tattoo's, and that's fairly apt. They're not going to understand what you're asking when you tell them what you want to do. You're not going to be able to give a child a tattoo while it's awake, and what doctor is going to agree to knock your child out so you can stick it with needles.

As I mentioned earlier, what bothers me the most is that the story being circulated (if even remotely accurate) suggests that a veterinarian OR a member of the vet community is at least culpable in this idiocy. It bothers me so much because it plays to a long held personal belief about where the villains or enemies of dog ownership are found.

We (dog people) often pontificate about where attacks on our rights and freedoms as dog/pet owners come from. We blame so-called "Animal Rights" groups, over zealous politicians and various non pet lovers (individuals AND groups) for the slings and arrows tossed at us beleaguered pet owners (particularly those of us who desire pure breed companions). To be quite frank, I do NOT subscribe to this particular point of view. MY belief is that the greatest danger to the freedoms and well being of our lives as responsible pet owners comes from WITHIN, not WITHOUT! I see renegade shelter and rescue groups (even though the numbers are small) as a bigger threat than the areas we often concentrate on. I see dog OWNERS who refuse to control or adequately train and protect their animals as bigger threats to the safety of our beloved companions. AND I've already made my point about vet/vet staffs like the ones SUGGESTED in this tattoo debacle. AGAIN, I concede that the numbers of these miscreants is small.

#1 - I fully recognize that the people/groups I mentioned above are NOT the norms, but they do exist and I fear they are far more harmful than we give them credit for being. AND #2 my apologies for being so long with this post, but this is an issue that strikes at my core. My belief is summed up in a quote that the cartoonist Walt Kelly stole, paraphrased and put in a panel of the Pogo comic strip from the 70's (I think): "We have met the enemy and he is us". Attacks from inside the pet world are far more insidious than those from without IMO.
 
Of all the ones shown, the only one IMO that was marginally okay was the one that was barely visible but the words said "Light turquoise tattoo showing spay". I guess it makes some sense on a female dog to tattoo that a spay has already been performed.
