Thanksgiving puppy vaccination reaction...

Did she give the lepto shot in the series? I personally have had way more trouble with the vaccine than it is worth. Also if she pre-doses with benadryl about a half an hour before the shot is to be given she should be ok, I had to do that with Nickle. As for rabies, its very rare that a reaction would occur with that one as compared to lepto or some of the others.

Did she give the lepto shot in the series?

According to the original post from SheltieLuver, Lepto was not in the shot.

Since others commented on the rabies shot being a possible cause, the original post also mentions that that shot was not administered.

I highlighted these points in SheltieLuver's original post, quoted below:

I asked her about what they had given her afraid that we might be looking at a leptospirosis reaction... she called her vet back to check and said they told her lepto was not in the vaccination. .... She was old enough to get Rabies... but, wasn't given one yet. So everything was exactly the same. Has anyone had anything similar? Could one of our forum vets advice?

Unfortunately I have nothing else to add beyond what some of our more experienced members have already mentioned.

Ember had the VERY same issue. It was awful. The vet says it's just something that happens (two different vets). Janet took Ember to get her first shots and she did great. I took her to get her 2nd shots and a BAD reaction. She had the same kind of shots Janet's vet gave her, the only difference was she also got the kennel cough nose spray, but they ruled that out of being the cause of the reaction. Now she has to be monitored when getting shots. Truthfully, it is very scary, but so far so good.

How did they rule out the Bordatella? :confused2:

I don't believe Bordatella was mentioned at all. Just Rabies (which was not administered), Lepto (which was not administered) and the combination shot (which was probably either DHPP or DHPPC at a guess).

Bordatella is an optional shot for that is only administered if the dog is going to be boarded at a Kennel or in a situation where it is around other dogs for extended periods of time, like a doggie day care or trial (obedience, confirmation, agility, etc.). It's not normally issued to a puppy during their standard puppy vaccination shots.

Silaria, I think ClantyreSheltie was talking about in Ember's case.

The vets (two different vets, two different offices) said that the Bordatella nose spray would not have cause the type of reaction that Ember had. Itch skin, nose and eyes swelling up, etc. And they were right, because she had a reaction on her next set of shots (no Bordatella), but it was controlled with meds.

Thanks for clarifying that. I COMPLETELY missed that mention of bordatella. I even went back through the threads to find it before commenting and missed it a SECOND time. :o

just wanted to say- Cranberry has had all his shots- including rabies and no adverse reactions to anything :smile2:

Patience and Cranberry's brothers and sister went for there third shot series... including the rabies last week too and they did just fine. I admit I was a little nervous after what happened with Patience worried about this allergy maybe a genetic thing. But everyone is fine.
