The Adventures of the Little Red Caboose

Very handsome new cousin. Loved all the pics but the "looking cute" one was a hoot! What a nice doggie family!

Thank you . . . Cubby is really starting to get pretty and adult looking. He has his father's size and personality (just like Uncles/Aunt Cooper, Carter, and Emmy and cousin Jade) and his mother's everything else. The dark shading around the face really frames him nicely and the dark mask is receding into a very deep widow's peak rather than total stripe down the nose. He has that collie head but since his momma's lines go back to the 1990's in just a couple generations I am hoping it means longevity is in his genes too and I can certainly trade off a more modern head for an exceptionally long life (I hope, I hope). He has an independent streak and is starting to really make his own decisions about where to sleep (nearby futon) and he is making good choices (except for the wood-eating decision). I took him with me to my hair salon this week and my Mom sat with him. He was SUCH a good boy sitting and watching and not even moving when a couple kids ate McDonald's right next to him. We ran a Home Depot errand before class last week and he pranced around quite happily. We are still doing fabulous on training and I am SO proud of how eager he is to learn. We sort of have a class of duds so he really shines. I am hoping we have the enrollment to do one more level or else we start our scent classes soon. When I started this venture I said I didn't care what he looked like, and in fact I thought he was kind of bland and ugly at times, but he truly is a lovely guy with a great personality. Now if we can get over being carsick! Still doing that one.

Santa delivered our gifts. We have Prime Shipping so we are on Santa's early delivery route which leaves the children for the Christmas Eve delivery schedule. The dogs are SO excited! Just measured Cubby at 18" at the shoulders at 8 months old this past Thurs. He might be just a little oversized! All the more to love! Melli is 16.5" and is just barely oversized too. Sorry I have THE worst house to take pictures in. Whole wall of windows!

How cool is this! I sent an email and pix to Cubby's birth family. They sent pix of 3 of his siblings. There were 6 in the litter, 4 boys/2 girls. His brother Huxley who lives in Nevada looks nearly identical and was the second biggest of the litter! His sister Zoey who lives almost to Oregon takes more after their daddy's lines. Cowboy is also a local dog and was the smallest of the litter. Cubby is the ginormous one at 18" at 8 months. His dad is 17" and mom is 14". SO cool to get to see the family for the holidays. Note that Cubby is the only one here with folded ears! I find that interesting.

That is awesome.. so fun to see how all the litter mates grow and change as well! Cubby is a handsome boy!

FINALLY . . . after the class that lasted forever! (7 weeks + 1 week off at Thanksgiving + 2 weeks off at Christmas/New Year's) . . . we graduated Intermediate 1! What is more than thrilling is that Cubby got ANOTHER gold sticker. He was the only one in Basic and getting it is rare. Then, ALL three of the dogs who made it through the course without dropping got gold stickers. We were told that NEVER happens. Maybe one once in a while, but not three in one class. Melli got hers after the 2nd time through the course. How exciting.
Here are pix . . .

We could got to Intermediate #2 (or advanced since the advanced course is really never taught) but it is 7:30 PM and I live an hour away. Not in winter with fog, rain, snow, dark of night. We will try it maybe in the summer. Next up, we begin 4 x 6-week courses for scent training and I can't wait to start. We are already playing "Go Find" the treat tossed on a rug of a similar color so it is not easy to see and has to be found by the nose. I can't wait!

Cubby is about 9 months now and all serious. We should start scent next week (postponed dang it!). I am cross registering to UKC so that we can compete in nosework when we are ready.

From having a bit of "brown dog syndrome" I am now really enjoying the shaded sable.

What a beautiful coat Cubby is getting...and such a handsome face...you can see the alert intelligence in his eyes.
