The Honest Kitchen Diet

Both my shelties couldn't figure out how to eat Honest Kitchen. Maybe I made it too soft? They couldn't figure out how to "bite" it. I have tried just about every brand of raw and dehydrated/freeze dried food on the market and keep coming back to good old Fromm kibble. My Cody is ~15 years old and has always eaten Fromm and has had very very few health problems in his life. He still tries to play with Jesse and can still walk up and down the stairs at home. I don't feed the grain-free varieties, just the ones with grains. They do get freeze dried fish skins to chew on and freeze dried chicken as treats though.

pomshe - Thank you - It is just water "on my mill"

I really hope Minnie will have the same good health.

Minnie (5 y) get Fromm's Gold not grain-free and she thrives so well on it - she get it as treats too.
dried fish skins to chew on and freeze dried chicken - do you dry it yourself ???

Sharon, I know this is an old thread however you are so right.
I like DFA, however if you look at the forums there, there are tons of threads where people were asking about the DCM issue and he never bothered to reply.
Since then, while I think his basic methodology is sound, his explicit avoidance of this issue and the peer-citeable research being done is both a dis-service and should be a warning.
Not sure if it was AKC or whomever, but one site had like a 20 page review on why they could not give a 2022 Best Dogfood analysis due to the DCM issue and the fact that many top tier manf's like Origen/Acana had those ingredients. Seriously, spent close to 30 min reading the article and it just kept scrolling page after page after page. Left impressed by their honesty.
Back on-topic, switched by 11 y.o. to HK from a home-made veg heavy, and he gained a good 5-6# in 2-3 weeks. Loves it of course, but gotta go back to some veg to bulk it out as he is to food as pre-teens were to Justin Beiber.
While I don't have any experience with Honest Kitchen, I would research the threads on this forum about commercial food and heart disease (DCM). I recently found out Dog Food Advisor which rates food, is run by a DENTIST. I'm sure his intentions are good but he's not a vet nutritionist.

Wow, I read my older post while we still had Bitsy with us. Happy nostalgia! Now Penny and Loki eat Hills Senior formula, and they're doing fantastic. I know some folks don't like Hills, but it really works for us. Asher is on Purina ProPlan Puppy Lamb and Rice. Our breeders feed ProPlan, as do many breeders because it's a good food and reasonably priced. They have a great longevity track record, so I'm going to stick with it for Asher -- but I also add Vibrant Pets Canine Athlete. He needs the added minerals.
