The RAW adventure

I've had my puppy for 3 weeks now. Since about day 4 he's been on raw completely. I was originally going to do kibble in the morning, and raw in the evenings, but that was more hassle then it was worth. I never realized how satisfying it would be to watch the little guy chow down on some meat with his little teeth.

So far the only thing he's been eating is chicken backs and necks, wings, oxtail, beef tongue (which was an interesting experience the first time I opened the package), liver, hearts, and gizzards. I've ordered some frozen green tripe that comes prepacked in 4oz packages, and hopefully it will get here soon. I am having a bit of trouble with variety, but I don't have any local butchers and lamb and pork are expensive. Not to mention I can't seem to find any cuts of lamb or pork that seem to be what I'm looking for (the bones are too large).

I've been feeding prey model, and I know that ground meat is frowned upon. I have access to an industrial size grinder, and was wondering if I was able to get pork or lamb, if I could just grind it to something the puppy can actually eat, and still get bone and meat. I'm just trying to add variety without breaking the bank.

Also, I've been about 13oz a day. I figured based on his projected weight of about 30lbs, and 2.5%. I also check him daily to make sure he's gaining weight, ribs can still be felt under his fur, but not sticking out.

Sounds lie you've got things under control!!

For my biggest baby, Abbie, we do 10oz a day (if feeding all raw, no kibble). I think her ideal weight is 25 lbs, and she's about 28 right now. I like kibble in the morning and raw in the evening because I'm afraid of travel issues and I don't have time to watch them eat in the mornings.

I also need to diversify. I'm working on making relationships with butchers around, so hopefully some opportunities will arise!

Love to see everyone giving this a try!
I was thinking the same thing when new Roomie's GSD was chomping down on her first raw meal, she had never been fed raw before, and she is a 10 year old rescue... It's so satisfactory!
My roomie saw Toffee's poop; compared to the GSD's and she was instantly sold on the idea, LOLLL
So I am in charge for feeding both... lol

Well, his breeder guessed he would be about 30lbs, so that's what I was using as my guess. I have never been so paranoid about my dogs weight before, so that's why I'm checking him constantly. One of my good friends is a vet, and I see her a couple times a week, and I make her check him at least once a week too.

I did find a butcher about an hour away from me. I think I can get some organ meet from them, and also possibly some pork necks and backs. They also apparently make their own raw food, but I don't think I want to try it. While it's super affordable ($.67lbs) the guy I talked to on the phone says that they put bread crumbs in it. :eek2: Not sure what that's all about, so I'm going to go see what exactly they have.

You've got a lot of bone in that diet, I think you need to add muscle meat. Try giving chicken leg quarters, and use Pork shoulders or butt for red meat. Not every meal has to have bone. I can get a meal and a half out of a good pork shoulder (5 dogs). I give the bony bit to my Collie, with meat still attached, and she spends all day working the meat off.

Beef hearts are also a great cheap(er) red meat source. If you have ethnic markets around, especially Asian markets, give those a hunt. Always something fun there.

I can definitely start adding more meat. I was more worried about trying to actually find some of the stuff that has bone in it. The meat part is easier to find!

I've tried a few ehtnic markets around, but they're all really small. I know where a big one is, but it's about 75 miles away.
