Things that go GRRR in the night..!

This isn't a late Halloween post, but it is a bit freaky!

Just to give some background:

Epic and Angus sleep overnight in wire crates which are side by side and in the corner of the living room. The crates are covered and I have towels which go down over the front at night. Epic has slept in his crate since he arrived, as has Angus after the first couple of nights. They are also fed twice a day in these crates. Angus is in the corner, in Yogi's old crate, Epic in the middle and Revel's crate is on the outside. (He only eats in his as he has a basket in my bedroom).

It is fair to say Epic didn't much like Angus when he first came, but I've always had them sleeping side by side in their crates with no problems. Epic is very clearly the dominant of the two and will Angus off, but mostly life is pretty relaxed.

All the boys have a good night biscuit. Epic and Angus have theirs in their crates, Revel has his just down on the floor. I put the younger dogs in their crates with their biscuits, pull down the covers and turn off the light then go into the bathroom to clean my teeth.

However, just over the last couple of nights something really bizarre is happening. As soon as I go into the bathroom, there is a sudden spate of growling and full on snarling. I've come right back out again and switched on the light and it stops. Light off and the growling starts up. It sounds almost like snoring....grrrrr.....grrrrr.....grrrrr, very low and really menacing sounding. Light goes on. Growling stops. Light off and it starts up again. After a couple of minutes it stops and all is quiet for the rest of the night.

There were a few pieces of kibble which had fallen between the cages so I thought they were squabbling over that. I cleaned this up on Saturday and made certain the biscuits didn't fall through the bars, but Saturday night the same thing happened. Both dogs eat the biscuits very quickly so there isn't any being left, so I don't think this is a food thing. Up until the weekend there was nothing in between the cages, so they could see each other but to be sure I hung a blanket between them so they can't see each other now.

Last night I was literally running in and lifting up the blanket to see who it was. It sounds like Epic's voice and certainly fits with his type of behaviour, but listening, the sound appeared to be coming from Angus' crate. Yet he was lying relaxed and not at all tense when I lifted up the cover. Epic also doesn't seem agitated - although as soon as I lift the cover up he thinks he's coming out so it's hard to tell.

I have a mystery on my hands! :eek2: It sounds funny but actually it's creeping me out a bit, because I just don't understand it. Also the initial snarling and squabble is quite loud and has woken Garry a couple of nights running (the bedroom is the other side of the wall) and he's not best pleased about that. I'm starting to dread bedtime.

Tonight I'm going to put my webcam in Revel's crate and point it at Epic to see what happens. It films in infrared so should show up, even in the dark.

I certainly agree that this all sounds freaky and I too would want to get to the bottom of this behavior. I can't wait to see what you discover! :eek2: :hide

How strange! That would have me a bit rattled too. I'm curious to hear what the webcam reveals... hopefully nothing too worrisome.

You say the crates are covered with a towel down the front? Is there a towel between them? I mean, can they see each other? I'd consider putting a towel between the crates where they butt up against each other no matter who it turns out is being crabby. Someone may be giving the stinkeye or making a noise the other dislikes-like when my DH does his 'phooo phooo' breathing thing at night. Some nights I'd like to growl at him! :( Really, it sounds like I'm sleeping next to one of the Three Stooges some nights.

You may have to put the crates in different spots if it continues, that's what I'd try if a towel doesn't help.

How strange, Julia, especially since it's just started. :confused2: I wonder whether leaving a night light on in the room would stem the tide of the noise. Or even splitting the boys up a bit further by moving one crate further away from the other for the overnight?

Do let us know what the webcam reveals! :pop

Julia, we had a similar situation (minus the light vs dark) develop with our Faelee as she matured...as a pup she was fine next to any of our other dogs if she was crated which we did at night for her because she was/is super active and it was the only way to get her to settle down enough to let the others sleep. We tried covering her crate, tried putting a movable wooden "wall" that my husband built around her crate, nothing stopped the aggressive growling when one of the others moved anywhere near her crate area. Finally we removed her from the bedroom, got her out of the crate and gated her in the hallway just off the bedroom so she can still see everyone but not constantly pester them. She loves her gated area and it has removed all the growling and nastiness...even when one of the others goes right up to the gate to say "hi" to her. I think she had focused on the crate being "her" property, whereas the hall is neutral territory that everyone uses all the time so she doesn't feel she has to guard it.

Hope you can get this resolved...it is distressing when these issues arise between two dogs that typically get along fine.

Well I put the webcam on last night and although it wasn't brilliantly clear in infrared, it did seem to look as if Epic was the culprit - as expected. The weird thing was though that he didn't seem to be growling at Angus....

I didn't quite catch what happened in the initial skirmish but it was not as pronounced this time and over very quickly. Then there is a slight pause and the growling starts. Epic is quite growly - usually it precedes a bark or howl but this is a different kind of noise all together, very definitely a warning growl.

The webcam was in Revel's crate, on the other side but it was in this direction that Epic was facing. He wasn't growling at the webcam either but more out to the front of the crate.

I was actually in the kitchen, boiling the kettle and Revel was with me so a different set of circumstances to normal. Now I'm wondering if it has something to do with the light going out (it's on a dimmer). I will reposition the webcam tonight for another look, but so far, I'm none the wiser.

With the infrared camera this is starting to feel like one of those 'haunted' programmes.....:eek2:

This is so interesting! I'm with you--reminds me of those ghost hunters shows. You should share the video so we can all speculate! :)
