Throwing up bile!

Thanks, Emmasmom,

He's on two meals a day, and the vet suggests an additional bedtime snack. I guess I'm struggling with what that snack should be.

I will try crackers tonight. I thought that bread would soothe the stomach. I guess I might be wrong. I don't have an soda crackers in the house (everything turfed with the move), but I'll find something.

He never threw up like this before the surgery :confused2:. How is his behavior, does he act sickly, normal, does he eat good, have normal potty habits!?

Maybe you could try a little bit of eggs or baby food before his bed time. I think I would call my Vet back, especially since this has been going on for a little while..:smile2:

He is totally normal! Eats like a porker, poop normal, etc. etc. There aree no signs of a sick pup, just the nightime bile puke.

I agree, time to call the vet again

Well let us know what the Vet says and how he's doing . Poor wittle man..

I read somewhere that bread is not good for dogs because of the yeast. I have no idea if it is true or not, but it doesn't hurt to try something different as his nighttime snack. I think I'd try the yogurt idea. Maybe just 4 or 5 kibble pieces mixed with some yogurt.

Good luck and keep us posted! I hope Indy is back to his old self soon. Maybe just to many changes recently with the surgery and the new house. Our little ones can be sensitive to change.

We've had a dogs who've done this too, and one who did it for months at one point, always around 3 or 4 in the morning. I had him tested and retested and there was nothing wrong and my vet came to the same conclusion as yours ... he needed something in his stomach. We resolved it by giving him a bit of kibble at night, sometimes mixed with yogurt or even a bit of chicken baby food with some kibble. It did make a difference and the throwing up stopped.

If you're giving him a feeding at night, I would definitely make it his kibble and not something else like crackers or bread. I'd think yogurt would be a good choice because of the probiotics in it.

The only thing that would concern me is that he just had stomach surgery, as you said. For that reason, I'd talk with your vet if it continues, especially if it's something new he's doing. Maybe there's something going on that's part of the healing process, but better safe than sorry. You've been through enough!

I agree with Ann about the recent stomach surgery. There may be a connection. I know people can have trouble after stomach surgery and need to be on medication for reflux. I suffered from reflux for over 20 years and sometimes just a little bit to eat can help. Your dog may be the same - suffering from reflux after the surgery. I've seen this in the medical practice where I work. I would talk to your vet though.

Thanks for all the info, folks! It seems like it is a relatively common thing. I tried crackers last night (before I saw your posted responses).

Tonight it will be kibble. I'll go out tomorrow and get some yoguort as well to have on standby.

He's just going to love having midnight snacks! Indy says: "Yippee! All I have to do is force myself to puke and she's gonna feed me even more!" (Picture it......!)

Oh yeah....and I can just see Bacca giving you the What-About-Me Face .... :(

Cadbury gets the 'Hungry Sicks'. I found it was necessary not just to feed an evening snack but to up his evening meal a little too.

I added fillers, either pasta, potato or rice, OR if you are worried about weight gain then a portion of vegetables or fruit with the evening meal works wonders too.

Cadbury always has a biscuit at bedtime.

Even so it is a juggling act and occasionally I get it wrong, especially if Cadbury had done a lot of exercise so is emptier.

I find a piece of dry toast is a very good bedtime filler too.:wink2:
