Tips for sheltie timid of humans

So much great advice from everyone! Thank you so much. We didn't get her last weekend, transportation vehicle had issues and postponed it to Easter Sunday, then cancelled it all together. She will be here tomorrow.

They sent me another video of her. In this one she is on a very long leash. They are scare she would run - they have 11acres w/o fencing. She is much calmer than the lab-mix. I like how the black mommy dog comes over and pushes the lab-mix puppy off of her. The 3 puppies in the video are all shipping today.

I have already signed her up for Puppy Kindergarten, which starts on the 29th of this month. My lab's trainer asked me to try and bring her this Sunday for a puppy kindergarten class. She has 3 herding puppies in this group and wants to see how she socializes with everyone. I don't know if she will be up for going, but we will definitely try.

I also have a great husband/wife pet store that we will be taking her to. We shop there all the time (they may be more expensive, but we love the one on one we get there). They are super sweet people and very patient with animals. I am sure they will help me socialize her.

I believe it's in the Shetland sheepdog standard that they may be reserved with strangers. Shelties are not like labs, jumping all over people. Please don't expect her to act like your Lab. In both videos she is happy and not fearful. Just bond with her and make sure you train a great recall.

very true...
if someone expects a lab acting puppy they will think there is something wrong with most Shelties...

I even had a friend say as much when he met my pup.

Within my first Sheltie (before I had German Shepherds) I spent months on google, but nevertheless, I was very,very surprised at how gentle and very skeptical, this little puppy was.

But now after months with lots of socialization I have, one - well balanced - brave - a little bit naughty - obedient and happy little lovable 9 months puppy.

Oh gosh no, not expecting her to be as crazy or happy go lucky, all over everyone personality like my lab. :eek2: I Just hope that the less fearful side of the lab will rub off on the Sheltie.

My lab is a little more than I wanted in a dog. My husband is a lab lover and wanted a lab. I'm more a collie or Sheltie person. I love my lab and she is turning into such an awesome dog. In another year or 2 she will be very mellow... I just wasn't expecting the out of control friendliness she insists she must show everyone she meets. Lol. If a burglar ever tried to break in, she would lick them to death. They are horrible guard dogs. Lol

Yes, thanks, I did read the article more than once. The 2 dogs will be in the bathroom with me with the cat sitting on the other side of the door waiting patiently for me to give her attention. I can see it already. Lol

I Can't wait for 3pm to get here so I can finally meet her....
 
Oh my gosh, I am sooooooo in love with my new puppy. She is not a flight risk like I thought she would be. She adores me and my husband. She has learned her name, Sabrina, already. She is doing pretty good with recalls already. She has even learned "sit"... Only one accident, poop, in the house which I blame myself. She has a voice, but is using it only in play a little bit.

Unfortunately she was coughing from the moment I put her in my arms to take her home and we took her to the vet yesterday morning... She has kennel cough and has to be separated from my other dog. I have to keep an eye on my lab to make sure she doesn't show any symptoms since they did play and drink out of the same water bowl the first day. Day 2 of meds and Sabrina is already coughing less.

I will post pictures soon. I am so happy I chose this puppy, she is bringing us so much love and joy!
 
So happy for you that your little lass is as sweet as she seemed to be in the videos.

Sorry about the KC, but you got her to your vet immediately and with care she should come through just fine. Make sure that the separation from your lab is not just a gate or x-pen where they can make nose contact. If possible have at least a "neutral" room between them so literally no close contact can be made.

Good luck on the healing. My guys are polar opposites. Sca is almost Labish in his thinking everyone is his friend or mistaken. He will even go back later when a dog grumps at him, since obviously they were just having a bad moment as everyone loves Sca :hide Spitfire is very much you need to be on the 'list' before you can touch him. He has improved but is also an expert level manipulator so even when you are deemed OK he will mess with you to see what he can get.

Maybe with the Lab buddy your pup will be more like Sca.
 
Qzee- Congratulations - It's really nice to hear that you received such a lovely little puppy - hope she will soon be completely healthy, so she can play fun games with your Lab. :yes:
