Toilet training

Is the smaller crate that Benjamin uses for his potty light enough for you to carry outside? If so, maybe initially hauling the crate outside would help him bridge the divide between only going inside vs learning that going outside is OK. If it is a metal crate with a floor liner, once he goes in the crate outside a few times, then remove the crate itself and just use the floor liner...then finally remove the floor liner too. It sounds as if he is convinced that the only allowable place to potty is in the crate inside your home and that mental set needs to be changed.

Perhaps take the crate outside with you for him to go and then close off the door so he can't go. Don't have the crate open inside the apartment.

Thank you all. Actually today I have removed the crate in the house and just leaving him the tray with some paper. He's been ok with it. Only in the morning when he walked over there and realized the crate was gone, he looked around a bit but then he just went and did his toilet there, and throughout the day he just walked there by himself like if the crate was still there. So that was not bad at all. I will take the tray downstairs with me in a weeks time and try again.

His other problem now is he's really scared of human!! :(

She-u,

I am going to start a new thread for you under "behavior" for help in socializing a shy/fearful dog. There are others here who have dealt with this issue too and hopefully you will get some good suggestions for working with Benjamin.

As far as the last thing you mentioned about him not pottying outside--I would not wait 1.5 hours for him to go. Take him out, spend maybe 5-10 minutes walking around. If he does not potty, he goes back inside into his crate for 10-15 minutes. Then take him back out, and repeat.

Can his crate be taken outside as a first step? then maybe remove the bottom (if you have the bit that slides out like Pippi's) then removing the crate altogether? Just an idea.
We are still working on toilet training Pippi.
