Training class order question

Melli came to me in August -- my trainer had me skip basic because by the time the next class started up it was clear Melli knew everything from basic from her previous life and me working with her at home.

We did Intermediate 1 -- She was a little confused for a week or two and then really caught on to the class environment. By the end she was pretty good. She did everything good to well though not spectacularly.

I stopped for winter (which we didn't exactly have in CA).

Starting this Sunday I have Melli enrolled in Agility 1 for 4 weeks just for kicks. I doubt I would go further with Agility because neither she nor I have the physique for it. However, I am told it is a good confidence builder and fun so we are going to try one course of Agility which I am told is rather easy and not very physically demanding. We finish that on March 2 and then March 4 we go back to Intermediate 1 on Tues. nights for 6 weeks. I intend to contine into Intermediate 2 immediately following and Advanced after that if they have enough for a class. I am redoing Intermediate 1 because we had a gap, because she was confused the first couple weeks as she was still learning English on top of being new to that school, and because she wasn't as clean as I think she should have been. With the exception of March 2 & 4 this is once a week class through mid-April and then probably to the end of May if Intermediate 2 is offered right away on weeknights.

Here's my question -- I see Scent 1 starting up March 8 (the Saturday after we finish the Agility). I really want to do Scent with her too. Might she (mind you she is about 5 years old so is mature) be able to handle 2 classes a week -- one on Sat. & one on Tues. -- or is that too much and I should pick up scent later ? I hate to tie down to Saturdays in Summertime so I would probably have to wait until Fall for that, likely after we get Intermediate 2 or advanced completed. How much "homework" does basic scent give? We are already reviewing everything from Intermediate 1 and also running rally stations and she is doing fabulously at daily practice so I think that Intermediate 1 class will be relatively easy for her as she has done everything already again in practice at home and been through the course before. I am not sure if I will go on to Scent 2 & 3 with her or not. It depends on if she is good. She is very nonreactve and non-stressed by the class environment.

Should I see about getting her in Scent at the same time as Obedience or only one class at a time? Thoughts?

Additionally- Melli gets VERY carsick. However, we are all pretty certain it is pyschological because she only drools or gets sick on the way TO someplace and never homeward, even after eating a meal or having many training treats while there. I suspect the only time she was in car in her former life was for grooming/nails -- which she hates having done -- and just getting in a car upsets her.

Wondering if 2x a week will really go far in breaking the psychological aspect of carsick by just overkill. But that would not be the sole reason to double up.

Most of the people I know who work in competitive obedience, do scent articles at the same time as another class. It also breaks up the monotony of the same commands every time she goes to a class. Also, doing scent work is very focused and can compress her enthusiasm for work. So, doing the two classes might just be what she would enjoy.

She should be fine handling two classes a week. Scent is not tough on the body like Agility or Obedience may be. I've done Ruutu in Agility classes two times a week a few times with no issues. Scent will have a lot of down time (depending on instructor).

Good advice. I see myself kicking off the year with the trio of agility, obedience, and scent and then choosing one path to keep going with. Agility is definitely not our fat selves' forte. Scent might be good but I don't see us joining a search and rescue team or anything. I do see us going through the obedience all through summer and the moving into more focused rally practice. We are learning the signs now as part of practicing back up for class. Maybe next spring I will bring her out in rally.

Eh, I need a hobby. I have been a hermit for 10 years after a really traumatic incident that happened to me Feb. 18, 2004. Time to move on and quit missing out on all the fun in life.

If I lived closer to training areas and I had the money, I'd be in class every other day. Unfortunately, the nearest place is an hour away one way and classes cost anywhere from $75-$110 for 6 weeks in this area. :eek2: I'm sure you both will have a blast training! Scent is fun, we got to play with it during Ruutu's puppy class :smile2:

I also live an hour from the city so anythng from grocery to movies to dinner out to husband's job to dog school is indeed an hour away. I did find that a 7:30 PM class was really hard on me but weekend or 6 PM is certainly better. In any case, compared to most of the country we have rather lovely weather to drive in and an easy peasy commute traffic-wise. I also live less than an hour from the lovely Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks which is our summer playground. Do you know the sparkle in a boy dog's eyes when you open the car door and he sees hundreds of Giant Sequoia trees? I had an Aussie who would weep openly with joy when we arrived.

As for the cost . . . my husband's hobby is R/C jet airplanes and live steam garden railway-size trains. I should have never married an only child! Of course, my husband married any only child too (ME)! So, I figure me and the fur-kiddo's deserve a small slice of the hobby budget. Sounds like a good excuse, huh? Considering I okayed and even urged the purchase of his last locomotive which was VERY pricey. I get lots of mileage off that purchase as justification for just about anything I want. LOL.

As a perk -- I also figured signing up for class would work as a rain dance. I stopped in the fall for winter. We have had NO winter. Yes, as soon as I signed up, RAIN! Totally worth it though to get my pastures growing. School is inside so that is a good thing.

I agree, making the decision to leave my cave for class is a big one and I didn't do it sooner or do more of it because of those very reasons but I think I will be selfish for a few weeks.

Good for you, doing stuff with your dogs is awesome!!
I feel there are never 'too' many dogsport activities :D As long as you put dog's needs first you're going to do great!!

I dabble in agility, which is my Toffee's and main love, started training disc dog stuff, and whenever I could I threw in some lure coursing when I still lived in Nova Scotia, doubt I will find a place here tho... once or twice tried laying a track, have now started with some trick training and with Spruce started looking at some doggy dancing freestyle ...

Toffee is my reactive and a sensitive kinda guy, so I do watch that he gets a spot where he can relax wherever we go and that he gets space from other dogs etc. So I understand the need to ensure you're doing the right thing for the dog, but in all reality scent work is awesome for building confidence too

Also, there are ways to do agility without being the most fit or slender person, as I'm a big gal myself, I am not going to nationals any time soon, but we have lots of fun competing and training anyhow :D

Thank you for the encouragement! I have really spent the past few years leaving the house once in two, three, or even FOUR weeks! Huge shopping trips and lots of visits by the man in brown truck! Time to get out and have some fun. I plan to take all things at a pace we like and just laugh my way through. Serious? Noooo. I want to have fun.

Just got notice that obedience has been pushed back a week as half the humans in the class prior have the flu so they all got delayed a week! That is good because it was looking like I would have one week with Sun / Tues / Sat classes and THAT would be way too much. This way one week would be Sun / Sat. Then we would pick up with Tues / Sat. routine and those days are more evenly spaced

It's shaping up!
