Training puppy to ask to go potty using bell...

I get the Sheltie stare when they need out - plant themselves in front of me and stare at me until I get up and let them out. If Emma really needs out, she runs from front door to back door, so I know how urgent it is.

I never used anything for mine to go outside - just took them out every so often. Noah used to stand at the door and wait for someone to let him out. He did this even at 10 weeks when I first brought him home - went right to the patio door to go outside.

I guess the most important thing is to teach the puppy to give a signal when he needs to go. Today, Mozart would bark everytime he needs to go when he is being left in the playpen but then because he also barks when he wants out so there's a few misses today. I'm still working on a way to get him to associate the bell with out when he is running free around the house. :rolleyes2:

I think he gave me a stare this morning so I took him out. The first time he stared and I took him out he didn't go, but the second time stare, he did go!! I want to say we're making head way.....hopefully :o

What I used to do with Buddy was to push his paw or face against the bell, tell him he was a "Good Boy", open the door and throw a treat outside. I always followed him out to see what he would do. I lot of times he did nothing, but he got an extra treat when he did his "Hurry Up". I had a refined lady trainer who thought that saying "pee" or "poo" was undignified, so we use "Hurry Up". I like the bell best too, because when you're in another room, you still know when they want to go outside.
Best of luck,
Dayle

Progress so far....he still can't tell WHEN he needs to go until its too late but he knows when I put collar on him, he is ready to be taken out. He will go to the bell and poke his nose at it but I can barely hear the bell even standing next to him. He knows the command to "go potty" once he is outside. I can take him to places he hasn't been before and use the command and he would still go. I'm still taking him out every 40 mins. So I'm still stuck at how to train him to tell us he needs to go OUT....:(

We use training bells hanging from the door! Our two figured it out completely in about a months time. I think my two learned so quickly because the bells would ring when Mommy & Daddy came and left so they knew that if they wanted the door to open and Mom and Dad weren't right there to see them, to hit the bells and we came 'running'.

We debated doing the bells when we got Mikos but it turns out he does the Lassie thing and comes to look me in the face and give a little bark. Brie on the other hand paces and stares. I have discovered that husbands and kids are not always as observant so the rule is that you take the dogs out every 2-3 hours if mom's not home!

Okay a month...so there's hope for Mozart yet. :wink2: We are still on the 40 mins schedule. He got the bell part. He got the "go potty" part. Just missing the most important part...telling us when he needs to go....

We made a little progress and some steps back....

I was out of the house for the entire day today. So Mozart was left in the hands of my brother...who actually did a very good job of looking after Mozart! During my absence....Mozart learned to ring the bell to go out!!! Just when we thought we were on a roll here....he made a pee and a poop mess in the house an hour before his bedtime. :uhoh: But just before going to bed, he went and rang the bell to go out 2x in half hour interval...oh well 2 steps forward and 1 step back...

In the beginning, you should take him out every time he rings the bell, even if you know he doesn't have to potty. That'll help him understand that "ringing the bell" means going outside. It can be very annoying, but it pays off. I remember when I first started training Bailey, she'd ring the bell every 15 mins, but I always brought her outside to help build that association. When I was positive that she understood bell meant outside, I started only letting her out when I know she might have to potty.

Even now, she'll ring the bell like an hour after she went out. I just ignore her and she stops after a few seconds. When she does really have to go out, she'll whine along with ringing the bell.

training puppy to use a bell

I trained my puppy to ask to go out using a bell by putting peanut butter on the bell. I hung the bell on the door. When she licked the peanut butter and rang the bell, I opened the door and let her out. She learned to ask with the bell within a day.
