Trimming feet (my thoughts) and Ears and Head

Thanks to both of you!

Chris-the 2nd time I was practicing trimming ears, I trimmed the hair so far back I was into the ruff! Luckily, it grew back! :D

The more you practice, the better you'll get! (And the less you'll screw up, or at least, in my experience!) Just remember-little bit at a time. It's much easier to take more off in 5-6 cuts than it is to take off too much in 1 or 2 cuts! (And it looks better, in my opinion!)

Thanks for the pix- I'll be giving it a try very soon. maybe tomorrow- supposed to have lots of rain- good day to stay inside and torture the pups :wink2:

Thanks Narmowen

This is terrific! Thanks for taking the extra time.

I plan to cut and paste into a document so that I can print it all off and follow step by step!

Good advice -- especially for me, who sometimes rushes. :o

Thanks!

Thanks Narmowen (and b/f :smile2:) for taking the time to take those photos and write the step by step instructions!

I trimmed Sadie's paws successfully for the first time over the weekend using the advice from GeeRome's thread. I was away the weekend you posted your advice and missed it until today! :(

I tried using electric clippers on the bottoms of her paws but found that I liked scissors much more, the clippers didn't do a very good job at all and didn't go through her fur. Maybe my clippers are too cheap but I really liked using scissors.

When you're cutting the fur that grows between the pads, do you cut the fur even with the pads or do you go down a bit lower?

I went a bit lower than the pads (only about an 1/8") because Sadie's fur seems to grow back very quickly and I don't want to feel like I need to trim them again a week later.

Previously I liked Sadie's ears to look natural but lately the fur on the back of her ears has been getting very unruley so I'm going to try and give them a bit of a trim using your advice. I'll let you know how it goes! :smile2:

I did it!

Narmowen, you're the best! After reading and trying and being too scared to really work on Layla's ears, I took scissors in hand and really "did" her ears. She looks darling! And it'll be even better when I get my thinning shears. You're an excellent teacher! :biggrin2:

Sorry if you have to spell this out for me! This is the only part I'm confused about, what do you mean by '...in a curving line?'

When you look at the dog's head sideways, with the ears erect, the fur behind the ears should curve into the ruff.

Look at these two websites (the profile pictures of just the heads.)

Especially the second picture. The fur curves from the top of the ear, blending into the ruff.
