Trimming feet (my thoughts) and Ears and Head

I trimmed her ears last night and it looks much better than it did! I still need some practice but overall its a big improvement.

Thanks Narmowen!

So I bought some thinning shears (yeah, at Walmart!) but they seem to tug at his fur, rather than do the job I expect. So, of course, he objects.

Either I just don't know how to use thinning shears, or I made the mistake of buying cheap ones.

Is there a specific technique for using them? Of should I buy better ones?

P.S. Thanks to all you experienced groomers for being patient with all us wannabees! :smile2:

I bought a lovely pair on Amazon, and they worked great. Then I dropped them on tile -- can you say hopelessly misaligned???

Open the scissors, and position them over whatever you want to thin. Then close them. Don't move the scissors back and forth (or whatever direction) when you cut, that's what seems to cause most of the pulling.

If they still pull, they're probably either missaligned or not sharp enough.

If you buy another pair, make sure you don't get the real cheap ones. Those ones seems to go dull much quicker. I spent 30-some on mine, and they are wonderful. The more teeth, the less noticeable the trim. (My big pair 7 1/2" has 42 teeth, my little pair 5" have 30 teeth.)

If you have the money, go to a beauty supply shop and buy a pair of those. I have a blue-handled pair from years and years ago that are just wonderful. They are short (about 3/4 the length of regular ones), and easier to use.

I bought a pair from walmart and they were terrible, they didn't cut the fur at all, only bent it sideways. I returned them and purchased a pair on ebay which are great

Barb...I did the same thing Ontario did...bought the cheapie thinning shears and they were worthless. They just gnawed at the hair! I got on PetEdge.com and got a good pair and the difference is remarkable. Now if only I were good at using them...:uhoh:

Thanks!

Pretty much what I thought. I think I'll just toss them and get a decent pair. I knew it was a mistake when I saw them...but I was there, and so were the shears!
