Trimming Feet

I forgot to mention how funny dogs can be. I have a cheap shaver at home that I tried to use to trim the fur growing between the pads on her paws but she was afraid of the noise it made, particularly when it it the hair (it gets a bit louder). Sadie however has no problem letting me use a dremel on her nails, she actually dozes off when I'm using it! The dremel isn't very loud but I think its a bit louder than the razor! :rolleyes2:
Maybe it's the pitch noise(higher frequency sound) of the smaller motor?

Love the blog! That is a great place for people to go and learn how to do it properly! I have been using scissors on the bottoms of my girls feet but I'm thinking that I need to invest in the personal razor!

ditto on the blog- I've been using the little ear trimming scissors when I brush Callie to trim up her fur. I have smooth floors so when Callie came to live with us, she really needed the traction but I didn't know what the whole foot was supposed to look like until I read this Sheltie Nation post:

Thanks for the great pictures, Dayna, this is wonderful! I have been a little (Lot) hesitant about grooming CeCe's feet, including clipping the toenails. But today after seeing the pictures I figured I could do it. CeCe has always been good about letting me touch her feet, and I may have to go back in and do some more touch ups but it worked great. I didn't even have trouble with clipping the toenails! Thanks for the blog!

Thanks!

What a great tutorial!! Thanks so much, Dayna. :biggrin2: I've blundered through foot trimming but this will be so helpful. Great blog, too!

That was a very good article also but lacked the detail I needed to figure out what I was/am doing wrong. I think part of my problem is that I cut the fur too short so it looks silly. I'm going to probably have to give it another week or two for the fur to grow back so that I can try and get the much coveted 'cat foot' look

Yeah, I found that if I trim too short around the nails then it looks very silly. I look at the overall shape of the foot as I trim, not at the nail itself. So the hair around the edge of the foot usually ends up coming to half way along the length of the nail. If you focus on where the hair is in relation to the nail, then you wind up with a funny looking foot. Trim that hair in proportion to the foot as a whole. If that makes any sense! haha

Yeah, I think that makes sense, I'll give it a try next weekend when the fur grows out more. Its getting a bit long in some places but is still short in others due to the bad job I've consistently been doing on her paws. I'll try using the electric razor on the bottoms of her feetsoon though, maybe tonight.

I was/am also very confused about trimming the fur at the top of the paw. Someone told me something along the lines of pulling the fur from between the toes up to the top of the foot and then trimming it. Boy did I ever regret that piece of advice! I don't know if I misunderstood or maybe I was cutting the fur in the wrong direction but her feet looked terrible. Maybe it wouldn't have looked so bad if I hadn't cut the fur too short on top of cutting it wrong. :eek2:

If it still looks silly after I follow your advice I was thinking of seeing if I can find a groomer that will do her paws for me and show me how to do it at the same time. I'm sure that if I can actually watch someone doing it that I should be able to figure it out. Good thing I never went into hair dressing! There are some really great groomers a Petsmart where I live, they've been great with my parent's sheltie and about giving me advicein the past so I'm hoping they'll help me, if all else fails. :rolleyes2:

Feet

Okay I cheat when it comes to Shadow's feet. My breeder does them and they come out real nice.I have used a clipper on his feet to remove the hair between his feet for agility.I got a small set at Petco for $20.00
