Two shelties at Mahoning County Pound, Oh urgent

Glad they have a happy ending. Wish we could get the shelter to change the time limit they have to keep them. It is crazy to think they could be up for euthanasia after 4 days.

Thank heavens they have an owner that wants them! That's fantastic news!

It's so wrong on so many different levels, it defies all reason!

I have a confession: for a while I had to quit reading this forum in the morning... because I can't start my day in tears -- I'm a man, damn it, we don't wear that look well at all! At night it's not so bad, it's almost bed time anyway, and my doggys have this magical way of making me feel like everything's right with our tiny part of the universe.

But now that I'm getting more involved in this rescue stuff I don't quite have that luxury...

I started back up with reading just this section in the day, because you guys are my heros, I'm serious, Danny's Mom, Calliesmom, LadyMcBeth, hcarol, Diane (lasheltie) and more -- since I've been following this section you're collectively batting 1000! To me what you all do here is nothing short of awesome, it's really, really cool!

But... (there always has to be a 'but', doesn't there?) But that said, I've observed that the way it gets done is terribly inefficient, sooo much duplicated effort, multiple people emailing multiple rescues, then ostensibly multiple rescues contacting the shelter, probably learning second-hand about each other's mutual interest in the same dog...

In short the approach is time-consume, labor-intensive, inexact and prone to omission. We (mostly meaning all of you) desparately need to utilize technology to optimize our efforts. And I (mostly meaning me) am committed to creating tools to make that happen.

not sure how I got included in with the awesome people involved in getting help for poor lost shelties- but thanks:winkgrin:

I'm embarrassed to be included in the list of heroes. But, I'm inspired by ideas about making a more efficient way to rescue these Shelties. I have found it interesting that in my location (Atlanta), there is very rarely a purebred Sheltie in rescue or shelters. When one pops up it finds a home quickly. The shelters are overflowing just not w/ Shelties. So many Shelties seem to be in the mid NE. Anyone know why?

Mark, what a nice tribute to the people here who have really kicked butt in getting Shelties out of shelters and into rescue, or have fostered or adopted.

I say, you go guy! The technology undoubtedly can be made to assist in the rescue world, and it sounds like you have the skills to make it happen. See, everyone helps in their own way!

About 20 years ago when we had our first Sheltie Skye, a Sheltie showed up at the Humane Society here, 12 year old sable girl. She was "Pet of the Week" on the news.... I couldn't believe my eyes. Same owner for 12 years, then dumped. I marched myself over there the very next day determined to get her because I told my hubby, "Who's going to adopt a 12 year old?"

But lo and behold, someone got there ahead of me and Princess had a new home set up already. It kinda started me down the rescue road.

You make a difference, one dog at a time. :biggrin2:

Because they're wonderful little friends, and because the breed has a devoted and passionate following, would be my guess. And even people that prefer other breeds think they're beautiful. (Good looks never hurt.)

I also agree, a more efficient way in linking shelties in need with their local rescue operations is such a great idea. I follow the rescue threads often here at S.N. and know Danny’s mom brings so many ‘shelties in need’ to our attention. She also takes the lead in sending emails, so I check with her before sending any emails on my end. In this particular case I did go ahead and contact NEOSSR as they are friends of mine, but I’m usually cautious as the redundant emails are not productive.

mmcginty, thanks for all that you're trying to do & for admitting that the rescue of animals can be overwhelming even for strong men. My philosophy is if each one saved one then we'd never need kill facilities. And by that I mean encourage spay/neuter, foster or adopt if you can, offer any extra time to a rescue or animal group & use whatever skills you have to reach that goal. I network with people wanting pets & people needing to rehome animals so that we can avoid the shelters if at all possible.

There was 1 lady that used to raise maltese plus took in any needy animal she heard of. She got to over 23 dogs! Most weren't spayed or neutered but they were well cared for. I met her & over time we got them all spayed/neutered & rehomed most of them. It is a work in progress but we are in the final stages of rehoming the last few so that she will have only 4 dogs as her personal pets. She didn't realize how many needy dogs there already are & she is now committed to helping educate others & encourage adoption.

Having a way to work together to save shelties as quickly as possible is wonderful. Count me in! There was a rash of shelties needing homes here in the past but in the last year it has tapered off. We don't have as many shelties here as in some areas but every time someone sees mine they fall in love.

mmginty count me in also. We will play follow the leader and you can direct our play. You are so right, stepping on toes in the pound and rescue efforts can sometimes be bad for our sheltie orphans. We need to organize and get the 411 out.

Oft times a pound will get innundated by calls about the same dog which makes them less than willing to work with us or rescue.

Kate
